It’s the far future. Humanity is gone, but has left behind cryptic artifacts and worlds filled with uplifted animals: everything from dogs and cats to otters and (our heroes here) elephants, the “Fants,” who reside on the titular planet of Barsk. The animals have spaceships and hotels and speech. Additionally, they have discovered koph, an herb which allows some to communicate with the dead by reconstructing particles of psychic energy, literally making ghosts you can converse with. Koph is found only on Barsk, and the peaceful Fants have no desire to share it would their more violent fellow uplifts, particularly since the Fants were forcibly exiled to Barsk 800 years ago for some mysterious reason. BARSK is filled with gorgeous world-building and characters, who, like Aesop’s animals, reflect all of humanity’s highs and lows. For all its depth, the book is refreshingly punctuated with humor, like the sloth starship captain who drives everyone nuts because…he…takes…so…long…when…issuing…orders. In an era where so much genre fiction gives you the feeling you’ve already been there are done that, BARSK takes you places you’ve never been with guides you’ve never encountered before.

I think it’s fair to say: this is not “another one of those.” While the focus is on two races of anthropomorphic elephant people, there are dozens more anthropomorphic races. (And unlike my complaints about a certain comic series, there is no human savior for the animal folk.) Their story takes place tens of thousands of years in the future–farther out than all but a handful of stories have been set in recent decades.

And the main thrust of the plot deals with koph, a drug that allows its visionaries to talk with the dead by gathering their soul particles from the farthest reaches of the universe. Koph–and its refinements and control, and the wisdom of generations past obtainable with it–is the center, the heart of the book–that and the relationships of the elephant people on the planet from which it is obtained.

So yeah: not another one of those. Quite uniquely itself. There is only the tip of the galactic iceberg here in how the different anthropomorphic species relate to each other and among themselves. There’s room for more, much more, and if this is your style of science fiction, Schoen definitely executes on it.

One thing that surprised me was that I’m used to thinking of Schoen wearing his linguistics hat, and the linguistics aspect didn’t come into the book until very late. It’s there! So if that’s something you’re looking forward to in a Lawrence Schoen novel, rest assured that it is present! But it doesn’t come in until quite late in the narrative.

Barsk is definitely on my re-read list, I've been through it twice already. I've read complex stories that feel like I'm inside the book's outline, checking off bullet points as we move along- there's none of that here! All the characters, ideas and story lines are introduced and reestablished with a great balance- no going back to reread passages for explanations, no overly repetitive reminders, and lots to ponder as I learned about nefshons and Speakers and Barsk's (and everyone else's) place in the universe.
As I read Barsk (the first time) questions kept arising that were all ultimately answered in the end, showing an attention to detail that I thoroughly enjoy. The second time, I saw new layers of subtlety that demonstrated how deeply the author has developed this world, without overwhelming his readers.
Barsk is on my to-gift list, for my friends who enjoy SF and also for those who enjoy thinking while they read. I highly recommend it!

This is not your ordinary book. This is a book about tree-dwelling, space-faring, anthropomorphic elephants (the Fant) who use drugs to speak with the dead. I loved it. The worldbuilding is marvelously complex, with characters of multiple species acting in believable ways. I'm particularly fond of Pizlo, the outcast Fant child who can understand the planet itself. His own people refuse to acknowledge him, but everything else does. Even the moons talk to him.
This book is wonderfully whimsical, yet NOT a children's book. It deals with things like prejudice and genocide, and it does it with wisdom and sensitivity. I recommend it.
