Excellent intro to Bartok,

Hippocrene Books had a series of composers, "His Life and Times". My favorites are the Beethoven (by Ates Orga) and this one of Bartok by Hamish Milne. The books are full of illustrations and are also richly detailed biographies. They don't take the place of serious college or grad school research, but they are absolutely appropriate for high school and undergraduate research, or anyone just wanting to get into the story of who Bartok was and why he was such a great composer.
