4.0 out of 5 stars War, February 7, 2007
This review is from: Basara, Vol. 21 (Paperback)
Finally Sarasa's great alliance comes together to conquer Kyoto and put an end to King Ukon's reign, but Shuri has other ideas and he is firmly in command of his father's army. Once more he faces Tatara in the battlefield, two clever, popular, tricky commanders bent on victory. Too bad they are still in love, their soldiers are dying for nothing and intriguers at Ukon's court are getting ready to destroy them all. And Kyoto. The White King holds the trump card, an assassin next to Shuri ready to strike. And her pet the Blue King is too close to Sarasa as it is.
A great story even if the art is not very good. Tragic how the starcrossed lovers have to fight a war and get people who love and trust them killed. It is the futility of war in letters ten stories high. One thing I liked was the intrigue. In real life everybody has his/her own agenda. So it is in Basara. It makes the story complicated but far more real. It explains why the kingdom is falling apart. With a weak king everybody starts jockeying for power and that usually leads to civil war.
Only who will come out on top? The potential for catastrophe and tragedy in the final books of this excellent series is huge. There are few guarantees even the main characters will survive.
