Book Description

1 and up
Essentials for the youngest fans: a baseball, a baseball cap, and DK's Major League Baseball board books. It's no surprise that for millions of American children, "ball" is their first word and a baseball cap is their first headgear. Kids and baseball go hand in hand. There's no better way to introduce America's favorite pastime to little ones than with DK's Major League Baseball Board Books. Kids' natural interest in baseball combines with their curiosity about counting and learning the ABCs in these grand-slam hits for the baby and toddler set. B is for Baseball, G is for Glove, S is for Shortstop. Baseball ABC is a walk through the alphabet with the help of baseball stars and their equipment. It features close-ups of the people and things of interest to the littlest little leaguers.

Editorial Reviews

From Publishers Weekly

In two new board books, youngsters learn all about numbers and letters via major league baseball. In Baseball ABC not only will readers pick up on the basics of the game, such as "home plate" for H and "shortstop" for S, but they can also glean history lessons from such examples as "Babe Ruth" under B, "Yankee Stadium" and "Yogi Berra" under Y and the infamous left field wall at Fenway, the "Green Monster" under G. By contrast, Baseball 1-2-3 is a straight read up to the number 10, with five base runners featured for the number five. Vivid photographs of actual major league players and their official gear will introduce young fans to the world of baseball today.

4.0 out of 5 stars Excellent Production and Quality, February 6, 2005

Attention, baseball fans: this is not a primer on how to play baseball, it's a board book intended for young children!

This is a great little book that benefits from official licensing from major league baseball. The illustrations are all high-quality photographs on plain backgrounds with simple identifying words. It's an alphabet primer, going from A to Z.

It can be read with an infant, who will be attracted to the variety of objects (bats, balls, gloves, players in various acts of hitting, pitching, and fielding) against the clean white bacgkrounds. Toddlers will like it because of the extra vocabulary beyond "ball" and "bat", and when they start to recognize the "characters" as people they might see on the field. As such, it might be a good read before taking your little slugger to a game, to give her or him an advance grounding on the confusion of people and things on the field.

Mom and Dad will enjoy checking out the illustrations and trying to identify the real major league players in some of the poses (they're not labeled in the book, so it's a neat game to play while your child looks back and forth at the pages).

Baseball 1-2-3 is the companion counting book, and is a little simpler and more focussed on the counting, and is probably of more interest to kids in the counting stage only. Baseball ABC is a little more versatile because of its extra length and the variety of objects and people depicted.

Well-recommended by this baseball fan and his toddler as among the better of the many baseball-themed books for the very young. A good gift for baseball-loving parents as well.

5.0 out of 5 stars My Baby Learned The Alphabet From This Book!, December 4, 2001
This review is from: Baseball A B C (Board book)
I don't know if it is just my child or the fun subject matter or both, but my 15 month old LOVES this book. He begs me to read him the "ball book." He learned to say "SAFE!" and "Yer OUT!" along with the accompaning hand gestures. It's adorable. He truly knows the vast majority of the alphabet on sight and I attribute it in large part to this book. It's a kick.

This review is from: Baseball A B C (Board book)
This book is just adorable if you have a baseball fan in the house. It features photos of items and well known players. For example, Cal Ripkin, Jr. is one of thr photos on the T page as third baseman. This book was given to my nephew as a birthday gift, I am ordering one for my daughter (and husband!)
