Book Description

Roger's eccentric, junk-collecting friend Kenneth takes him on an awesome undersea ride in a homemade submarine. Their visit to a subaqueous cavern turns up a wonderful surprise: a cache of supervaluable baseball cards!

From the Trade Paperback edition.

Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

Grade 2-3-- Roger's elderly friend, Kenneth, who is a collector and a recycler, is upset about having his taxes raised. He takes the boy for an amazing ride in his homemade submarine to his undersea storage shed where Roger finds a trunkful of valuable baseball cards worth enough money to buy a Corvette and pay the taxes. Roger keeps his favorite card concluding that, ``Some things are worth more than money.'' It is doubtful that young readers will relate to themes of escalating taxes and selling baseball cards to buy a car that Roger cannot drive. On the other hand, the colorful cartoon illustrations are appealing and contribute greatly to the mundane text. The vocabulary and sentence structure are age appropriate. Marzollo's Soccer Sam or Donnelly's The Titanic: Lost & Found (both Random, 1987) are far more entertaining than this selection. --Blair Christolon, Prince William Library, Manassas, VA

5.0 out of 5 stars educational as well as fun, August 24, 2000

This book was perfect for my 6 year old son. It taught him about the importance of starting a hobby and the value it has to him and to others. More importantly, it was a book that I did not have to beg him to read. He wanted to learn how to read it himself. It has Baseball. It has Submarines. It has Mermaids. What more can you ask from a book.

4.0 out of 5 stars A cute book for kids under 9, July 21, 1999

My brother is 7, and LOVES baseball. I read this book to him 8 times, before we had to give it back to the library. He cried for almost an hour. Now, I can finally buy it for him.

5.0 out of 5 stars great story, December 15, 2001
Hi: I run a home-day-care. All the boys at around 1st to 3rd grade level have really ejoyed this book. Great for getting the boy reading that isn't showing much interest. It is more about adventure and fun than about baseball. You will be disappointed in the book if you are getting it only because it says baseball cards. It is a great adventure when an older man and a young boy
become friends and they go under the sea to the man's special underwater treasure room. Very imaginative.
