From Library Journal
Oral history is an approach often used to chronicle baseball's past. However, this compilation differs in that the interviewees are not telling their life stories; they are simply spinning a good yarn or two, which Blake has subsequently put in a temporal context with other players' tales. The players interviewed run the gamut from hall of famers to those who had short careers, from the oldest living player to players currently active. Their stories concern famous players like Babe Ruth, Ty Cobb, Mickey Mantle, and Willie Mays and tell of significant incidents like Ruth's fabled "called shot" and the broad spectrum of everyday life in the professional ranks. The text includes new perspectives on well-known lore in addition to a wealth of original material. Recommended for popular baseball collections.
