The Real Deal,
By Ed Reiss (New Jersey) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Baseball Instruction:The 59 Minute Baseball Practice [VHS] (VHS Tape)
Only positives can be said on this video. It was beyond my expectations for a few reasons. It was well organized and gave an excellent description of each drill. The video also puts up a picture of a baseball diamond and the positioning of each player during the drill. The narration explains the benefit of each drill. Some things I did not understand in Little League, like the first and third situation are explained and they make sense. The hitting drills are the best I've seen. The proof of the pudding was last Saturday at our practice when my team did not want to leave the field after some of the drills and games from the video were tried. And to top it off, another coach from the next field came over to ask about some of the things his team saw us doing. This is excellent for 8-12 year olds and I suspect most of the drills can be used for older kids with a few adjusments. This is a great tool combining fun with skills.

SIX STARS - This Is The One You Have Been Looking For...,

This review is from: Baseball Instruction:The 59 Minute Baseball Practice [VHS] (VHS Tape)
My search finally ended. This is the perfect teaching tool for the Little League manager/coach. I have read many books and looked at many videos, and none come close to this one. I will never have another boring Little League practice. I have tried this out already and the kids and I are loving it. Buy this video and plan to sit down with your pause, rewind & play button to record these great drills on paper, so that you can use them in practice. I would recommend this, in particular, for the age group 8 - 12, and older. I realized how boring some of my practices have been in the last few years, so I began a search of material to change that. I have wasted money on some, but I must say I would have easily paid 4 times the cost of this video. For the Little Leaguers that are age 7 and under, I would recommend a more fundamental book or video that teaches the very basics. Get this video for ages 8+.

The Best Instructional Video For Baseball I've Seen,
By A Customer
This review is from: Baseball Instruction:The 59 Minute Baseball Practice [VHS] (VHS Tape)
This guy really put a lot of planning in this video. I coach Little League up in Massachusetts and have bought a number of baseball videos. The quality of the filming is excellent. The drills are simplistic yet he puts a twist on some of them and they are very dynamic. His idea of running a baseball practice in under one hour is great because a lot of coaches just do batting practices for two hours. The drills are creative. The planning is excellent. And the literature sent is very good also. I have no reservation in recommending this to parents of Little Leaguers and coaches.

A great opportunity awaits...,

I was a bit skeptical about buying a video online, but I don't regret for a second that I purchased the "59 minute baseball practice video". The video was put together with both organization and preparation. I can't even begin to describe how well it is going to help me in my next baseball season. Marty Schupak is a baseball genius and the video is a must buy for any coach or parent. If you are a coach, the video will help you with tons of drills. If you are a parent, many of the activities done in the video can be modified to be used at home. This is a MUST BUY for anyone involved in Little League.

Effective New Ideas for Baseball Practices,
By Ted Davis (El Paso, TX) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Baseball Instruction:The 59 Minute Baseball Practice [VHS] (VHS Tape)
I have been coaching Little League baseball for 4 years now, and my teams have done fairly well. I'm always on the lookout for ways to help my players do better, and I've watched a lot of baseball videos, without finding much that I could really use to help my team. I ordered the 59 Minute Baseball Practice, wondering if this tape would be any different from the others. I'm pleased to be able to say that this tape is very worthwhile. It's the only tape I've seen that helps me deal with a problem I've found in the past with my practices: how to improve my players' skills, involve all team members just about all the time, and keep them all interested and motivated. The many drills in this tape will help you do this, and complete the practice in under an hour, as the title states. This tape includes enough drills for a number of practices, and you can change and adapt them as you see fit. They cover all the important areas players need to practice -hitting, throwing, fielding and running - while challenging them. I particularly like the tape's ideas about making many of the drills into games or contests. The tape is very clear - the drills are easy-to-understand - and it is also well organized, and well-paced. While it's not yet baseball season, I've been working with most of team in early practice sessions, and the players' reaction to these new drills has been terrific; they think the drills are fun. It's also worth noting that you can conduct a complete practice session, working on all skill areas without a baseball field if need be, which has been particularly helpful in the off-season. Overall, 5 stars! I'm looking forward to the next video in this series.

Great video with a lot of good ideas,

As a new baseball coach I was looking for a video that wouldshow me some good drills and how to effectively use my practicetime. This video really hit the mark. I'm incorporating as much as I can from the video and the kids really enjoy the drills. There is so much to teach young players and this video showed effective ways of doing it. My son enjoys watching it and he learns by seeing the kids on the tape performing the different drills. END

Shupak's 59 Minute Baseball Practice is first rate. The video contains of a lot of drills appropriate for any level of baseball. Each drill is described, then it is demonstrated using Little Leaguers. This video was very helpful to me in organizing fast moving, more interesting, and quicker practice sessions. Although the coaching points for each drill are mentioned (for example, "turn to the glove side when making a relay"), they are not discussed in any depth. A novice coach will need additional resources to teach the fundamentals to younger players. If you are short of practice space, Shupak's rag ball drills are the solution. If your baseball practice runs two hours -- an hour of batting practice and an hour of situations, get this video, and change your practice. Your players' skills will improve, and they will be more willing to practice hard.

Great drills--lacking on planning and organizing a practice.,

This is a great video if you are experienced in setting up and running practices-not as good if you are a novice at coaching. The drills are excellent overall. They will work well with most ages, though a few will be too sophisticated for very young players. The number of drills is also well spaced between requisite skills--such as hitting, base running, fielding in the infield and outfield, etc. The clips are quick--both in terms of length and the speed of sequencing on the tape--plan on viewing the tape at least twice to get it all. On the other hand, the tape's only about 30 minutes long, so viewing twice is no great burden. The "practice organization" section is weak--two different suggested practice schedules are briefly displayed with approximate times for each. Based on my experience, and given that several drills require a lot of equipment and/or paraphernalia, I'd be skeptical that you can actually get the suggested drills in in an hour practice--figure on an hour and 20 minutes. There is absolutely no other organization tips ot guidance on how to organize a practice, effectively use assistant coaches or run a game simulation, etc. Bottom line is this is s drills tape--a very good one, but strictly a drills tape nevertheless. This is a good addition to a coaches tape library but not he "ultimate" tape it's been made out to be.

This is a great video, and I found plenty drills that I used with my teams. However, the drills are best suited for older Little Leaguers (11 and 12 years and up). The drills are not well suited for 8 and 9 year olds, who lack the physical and mental maturity (which is the level that I am coaching). However, I was able to adapt some of the drills to the younger players. The video I'd recommend for all PARENTS is "Backyard Baseball Drills", to help their kids outside of formal practice time, since time restraints make individual instruction difficult for the coaches during practice.

Great buy for all coaches,

My neighbor bought this video for his nine year old girl who is playing softball. After he saw this video, all he did was rave about how it was the best one he ever saw. I had to get myself a copy. When the video arrived, I popped it into the VCR and was very impressed with its content. I had to grab a paper and pencil, however, to keep track of all the drills and ideas that the video presented. Most of the drills were new to me, some I have seen, but most opened my eyes to a new type of practice. I used to stand out there and throw BP until my arm nearly fell off. Practices would go for as long as three hours and the kids that took BP would have no reason to stay. Now, my practices are no longer than an hour, but I'm getting three times the work done. Excellent work, very well thought out, and could be used at just about any level (under the collegiate level).
