Book Description

July 2002
Practitioners of America’s pastime at the youth level are often criticized for encouraging kids to dream big when they have little chance of playing professionally unless they have great ability. But working on baseball and softball skills can teach kids the importance of such social values as effort, competition, sacrifice, work ethic, teamwork, desire, discipline, confidence, hustle, sportsmanship, and having fun.

Written for coaches, this work presents approximately 150 baseball games and activities for elementary age kids that focus on teaching, improvement of skills, and enjoyment. Sections are broken down into the following topics: baserunning, bunting, catching, fielding, hitting, throwing, and pitching. Each section begins with a brief review of the fundamentals, and then introduces creative skills and drills that can be practiced as a group. For each activity, the age group for which it is appropriate, its objective, the equipment required, and the rules are specified. Also covered are the essentials involved with directing a camp, clinic, practice, or physical education class.

Editorial Reviews

From Library Journal

How do you keep kids interested during practice? How can you maximize their baseball skills? When are children ready for specific baseball-related challenges? These are among the questions that are clearly answered in this instructional book by Baker, an instructor at Worcester State College and head coach of the school's baseball team. Writing especially for coaches, Baker describes and diagrams over 150 baseball games and activities for elementary-age children. Various chapters cover running a baseball camp, base running, bunting, catching, fielding, hitting, throwing, and pitching. The specific activities (e.g., "Hole in One," "Move It") are subdivided according to age appropriateness, object of the activity, equipment needs, and rules. Dirk's short, informative book will please its intended audience and is recommended for large public libraries and specialized collections in physical education. This review is from: Baseball Drills for Young People: Over 150 Games and Activities (Paperback)
I appreciated the laserlike focus of this book. Most books written for coaches of young players focus, for instance most of excellent books published by Little League, on how to teach particular skills. This is important. But having a fun way to practice those skills, in order to create teaching moments, is equally as important and that's what this book does. Baker does an excellent job of describing a variety of games and activities that a coach can use in planning his (or her) practice, while still stressing possible coaching points. Baker also largely avoids falling into the trap of listing two nearly identical drills in a quest to meet an arbitrary number (150 in this case). For the coach of the young player (ages 10 and under) this is undoubtedly the best drill book on the market.
