Book Description

April 1, 2012

Baseball Fantography is a celebration of baseball through the eyes of fans via photos they’ve taken of players, ballparks, and related subjects over the past nine decades, along with essays, sidebars, and quotes. The project originated when the author discovered an old 1960s snapshot of himself as a teenager with his idol, Roger Maris, at Yankee Stadium. Realizing that he couldn’t be the only one with these hidden photographic gems, he began collecting baseball photos taken by fans. The book contains more than 250 never-before-published images (Roberto Clemente, Mickey Mantle, Derek Jeter, Josh Hamilton) in chapters on subjects like ballparks, spring training, broadcasters, dugouts, and baseball cards, and features contributions from baseball aficionados and notables like Hall of Famer Ozzie Smith, a 35-year veteran Topps baseball photographer, and a former president of the Baseball Hall of Fame.

Praise for Baseball Fantography:

"The never-before-published shots are cool, offering a new look at the familiar." —New York Post

Mr. Strasberg offers a book that combines interesting stories with many different voices and ties them to photos you thought your mother threw out with the baseball cards. Cards were fun but these photos are real keepers. What I really like is that fact that the photos cover fans view of the game from eight or so decades and show how the game has grown and changed, but the fans love of it remains remarkably the same. The fans stories behind the photos are cool.

The 18 authors tie togther some real unsual topics (scoreboards and signage, moonlighting (I never knew what players did in the offseason}and graves {really unique photos and crazy stories}). But the stuff you remember as a kid (camera day, seats, and baseball cards) just jump off the page and take you back to the days when dad and mom took you to the games with your brownie.

For my money, this is the best $20 you can spend on a baseball book. Heck, you can even share it with friends and even if they "forget" to return it, you won't regret buying another!

My only criticism---it's way too short.

Let's hope some other shutterbugs out there dig out their albums and shoeboxes and send stuff to him and he'll have more material to do a sequel.

5.0 out of 5 stars A beautiful book of baseball photos and stories. March 31, 2012
Format:Hardcover|Amazon Verified Purchase
This is a wonderful book from the patina front cover to the last page. The stories are as good as the photos by fans from the last 70 years. The layout of the book is very appealing. Twenty three chapters from Spring Training to mascots to transportation to ballpark personnel. And a special section about Hall of Famer Ozzie Smith with 25 photos of him. The author, Andy Strasberg, tells how he came up with the idea for the book and tells of his special relationship with Roger Maris and the photo of the two together. If you have ever taken a picture at a baseball related happening you can relate to this book. There are photos of the famous and the not so famous but the pictures all have a story and that is what is really special.

5.0 out of 5 stars Raw and gritty May 8, 2012
By Steve F
Format:Hardcover
Terrific book. I enjoyed seeing the greatest game from the fans perspective. These images are one of a kind. I've been to Fenway hundreds of times and enjoy what happens in the stands and warning track as much as what goes on in the game itself... The shots off the field, where the players interact directly, speak volumes about the players that one doesn't get from a studio or posed shot. The image of Nick Altrock in front of the green monster, HOF Induction Ceremony and the snapshots of Braves Field are favorites. I look forward to Strasberg's next work.

Lots of trivial moments not particularly interesting to me.

Print is too small, which is annoying, and the photographs are meh.

Great Book! I can almost smell the popcorn and hot dogs looking at these pics. I think of this book as the human side of baseball; that's what really makes it great.
