In Florida you can see major league baseball form April through September in Miami and Tampa Bay, spring training games throughout central Florida in March, minor leagues ball in the spring and fall at over a dozen Florida sites, college baseball throughout the spring in dozens of towns, and high school and organized youth leagues throughout the year in hundreds of towns all over the state.
More than a million fans a year attend the minor league games of the Florida State League in hopes of seeing the next Al Lopez, Stan Musial, or Early Wynn, just a few of the ball players who played here and then went on to make the Hall of Fame.
About the Author
Kevin M. McCarthy, a lifelong fan of baseball, is a professor of English at the University of Florida in Gainesville, where he teaches a course entitled "Writing about Baseball."
