Book Description

Sports History December 17, 2000
Some say that Kansas City has the best black baseball, blues, and Q in the nation. It has been called the heart of America, a cultural melting pot, and the breadbasket of the Midwest. It was also home to the famous Kansas City Monarchs. Black baseball began in Kansas City with the Maroons in 1890. However, it was not until 1921, when the black Kansas City Monarchs triumphed over the white Kansas City Blues, that black players started receiving national attention. The Monarchs produced several championship teams and major league players, and became black baseball's longest running and most stable franchise.

This review is from: Black Baseball in Kansas City (MO) (Black America) (Sports History) (Paperback)
A wonderful illustration of the Kansas City Monarch franchise. Richly illustrated with some wonderful team photos dating back to Jenkins and Sons and the earliest incarnations of the Monarchs club. Every great Monarch is depicted in this book including a few of Monarch's owner J.L. Wilkinson during his playing days. I would have like to have seen a few game photos of Monarch and Cuban pitching great Jose Mendez, but you can't have it all. Overall this is a wonderful addition for any fan of the black baseball and the Kansas City Monarchs.
