Book Description

March 1999
It's a quirky marriage of the New Age and the sports page. Bringing the ancient wisdom of divination by cards to the familiar actions, characters, myths, and metaphors of America's favorite pastime, Baseball Tarot is a novel way to seek answers to life questions. From being thrown a curve to hitting in the clutch to coming out of left field, clarification is in the cards.

Expertly translated from traditional wisdom by Mark Lerner, author of the Page-A-Day Horoscope Calendars, and Laura Phillips, Baseball Tarot offers insights into love, work, relationships, dreams, decisions, and dilemmas. Each set includes a custom-designed, full-color 78-card Tarot deck - exquisitely illustrated by baseball artist Dan Gardiner and edged in a fifth color of gold - plus a 336-page illustrated book on how to lay out and interpret the cards. There are The Majors (major arcana) - The Rookie, The Manager, The Pitcher, The Catcher, The Ump, The Goat. The Minors (minor arcana) - Mitts, Balls, Bats, Bases. Even original layouts - The Change-up, The Diamond. As Roger Angel once said, "Baseball seems to have been invented solely for the purpose of explaining all other things in life." Step up to the plate.

5.0 out of 5 stars Unique and wonderful tarot deck & book! Highly recommended!, July 28, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: Baseball Tarot : Book & Card Set (Paperback)
Baseball Tarot is totally the coolest! Laura Philips and Mark Lerner have a deep understanding of both baseball and tarot. As a baseball enthusiast of 28 years, and as a tarotist of 17 years, I find their achievement truly amazing and powerful! I now use Baseball Tarot as my primary deck, with great results. The book is warm and wise, and the card illustrations are rendered with a feeling for the game and for Life. My friend Joe, a sports-nut who is not (or *wasn't* :-) a woo-woo type at all, bought the deck and was astounded when he started using it--stunningly accurate readings and insights! And I bet he never would have warmed up to the Rider-Waite (Pamela Smith) deck or any of the others. Baseball is a metaphor-rich game that fits very nicely with the esoteric tradition of tarot. Good job Laura and Mark!!

Note: This deck is not to be confused with the older, and to me far less satisfying, "Tarot of Baseball" published by U.S. Games Systems, Inc.

5.0 out of 5 stars A real home run!, August 6, 2000

The interpretations and graphics on these cards make them a real delight to use. I am actually playing tarot. I have used many different decks but this is by far the clearest for me. This is a great way to introduce sports minded men to this wonderful practice.

I just purchased this set as a his/her wedding shower gift and everybody just loved them. They were passed around from person to person, the ladies and the gents each finding something of value from them. The art work is beautiful, the book very complete, and the card discriptions are really very insightful. They explain things in an easy to understand, applicable to today way. They were a hit. I have about 4 more people I'm going to buy decks for including myself. I doubt anyone would be dissapointed in this set. Certainly unique for a collector of either Tarot cards, or baseball paraphernalia. Thanks :-)
