5.0 out of 5 stars The Only True Reference Book, March 7, 2000
By A Customer
This review is from: Baseball Uniforms of the 20th Century: The Official Major League Baseball Guide (Paperback)
I purchased the original hardcover edition of this fantastic book in 1991 and the subsequent updated softcover edition in 1993 and found that not only had Mr. Okkonen added the uniform additions from the previous two years but also updated and corrected the earlier edition. Such attention to detail obviously makes this book a must-have for any true baseball fan. The explanations of color usage, choices and changes from 1900 to 1993 are insightful and amazing. Each team's uniforms and historical evolutions are also a great feature. I would love to see an updated 2000 edition. The fact that the first two editions are so hard to come by emphasizes the popularity of the books. So how about it, Marc? An update shouldn't be so difficult; just seven more years. Batting practice jerseys and caps need not be included, just home, away and alternate uniforms to keep all of us who love the grand old game in the know.

5.0 out of 5 stars Okkonen: My Constant Reference, December 19, 2001
By
I have been collecting MLB replica/current baseball caps since the late sixties. I guess that makes me a fanatic. I received a postcard from Marc Okkonen a few years ago, and thought his 1991 volume was without sequel. Now I have heard that there is a 1993 revision of this fine book, with corrections. (Baseball lovers need this). I started getting serious about tracing the history of team caps in 1995, so I have a bit of a gap that a "new" Okkonen could help me fill. I have found a few errors in the book; in fact the author said there were some. Where can anyone go to improve and update Okkonen? Until further notice, he is my constant reference for cap styles, a monumental piece of research, which I use "for the love of the game."

5.0 out of 5 stars Wonderful Reference Book, February 27, 2002

Clay Woody (Albuquerque, New Mexico United States) - See all my reviews
When I discovered BASEBALL UNIFORMS OF THE 20TH CENTURY, I was overjoyed. It is a true missing link of baseball information. Of all the pictures of ball players I poured over through the years, players who graced the diamonds during the first 50 years of this century, the one thing I could never discern was the COLOR of their uniforms. However hard you studied the permeations of gray and black in the photographs, you could not accurately guess the colors. Similarly, it was difficult to detect the exact year each major league uniform changed. This book solved those mysteries for me. I place it among my most valuable baseball books, a collection which encompasses maybe 80 books. I would love to see a similar book done on baseball uniforms of the 1870s-1890s, as well as a book on football uniforms of the 20th Century. Kudos to the author and publisher!

5.0 out of 5 stars A Uniform Example of Baseball Fun, April 5, 1997
By A Customer
This review is from: Baseball Uniforms of the 20th Century: The Official Major League Baseball Guide (Paperback)
Marc Okkonen has done something no one else has done-he has researched and drawn examples of every Major League Baseball uniform worn in the 20th Century. Are you interested in the uniforms of the 1909 Cleveland Naps (now called the Indians)? Or how 'bout the 1969 Seattle Pilots (they became the Milwaukee Brewers the very next year!)? Well, Marc has created a book that will quench your thirst for knowledge! The book has two sections-the first shows each team's changes through the years; the second shows all the uniforms year-by-year. The book also contains interesting facts, such as what old American League team was called the "White Elephants" and why!

If you really love baseball (and you should!!!:-)), then you gotta' read Baseball Uniforms of the 20th Century.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent Reference Book, September 30, 2002
By
This review is from: Baseball Uniforms of the 20th Century: The Official Major League Baseball Guide (Paperback)
Extremely comprehensive for any baseball historian. Very informative and extremely interesting. Much like everyone else who submitted a review, I would love to see a revised edition of this book - especially with the onslaught of alternate jerseys and sleeve patches.

5.0 out of 5 stars Where's the second edition?!, June 10, 2001
By
Baseball Uniforms of the 20th Century is THE definitive reference on baseball uniforms. Nowhere will you find a more complete list illustrating every major league uniform used every single year. Do you know when the Astros introduced their "rainbow" uniforms? What year did the White Sox sport Bermuda shorts? Did you know that the New York Giants once wore plaid uniforms? It's all in this book. I find it odd that this book was written to represent the uniforms of the 20th century seven years before the century's end. This book is crying out for a second edition. There have already been dozens of uniform changes since 1993. Marc Okkonen, I'm beggin' ya. PLEASE!

5.0 out of 5 stars The 1 Baseball Book you Save when the house catches on fire!, January 29, 2001

SIMPLY the greatest baseball reference book available both in print and on the internet. Marc Okkonen's pain-staking and detailed work, in my opinion, earns him a place in Cooperstown! I like many others would die for an updated version beyond the 1993 season...what a gift! DOES ANYONE KNOW HOW TO CONTACT MARC OKKONEN? If so let me know at stlouiekids@msn.com. Thanks

5.0 out of 5 stars Best book on this subject!, March 30, 1999

This review is from: Baseball Uniforms of the 20th Century: The Official Major League Baseball Guide (Paperback)
I thought this was an excellent book. I have a copy that I've had for four years now, but it looks more like it's 40 years old, what with all the dog ears, and such. I've gotten so much use out of it. I work at a bookstore, and have been on the lookout for an updated book, but this author doesn't seem to be writing ANYTHING, anymore. I wish he'd realize the potential and release a new version, including all the vast changes have been present since 1993.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great book. Needs to be updated., February 18, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: Baseball Uniforms of the 20th Century: The Official Major League Baseball Guide (Paperback)
The 1991 edition was great. It was the first time that I ever saw all the 20th century uniforms. The 1993 update included the Marlins and Rockies. I would gladly purchase a 1998 update that included the Diamondbacks and Devil Rays,as well as, the 19th century uniforms.
