Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

Grade 2-4-- A simply written look at Kramer's top choices. The author devotes a chapter each to Walter Johnson, Lefty Grove, Satchel Paige, Sandy Koufax, and Nolan Ryan, whose collective careers span from 1907 to the present. While selecting the ``greatest'' players or teams in any sport is an easy way to start an argument, no one will deny that the subjects in this book are among the elite. Five other outstanding pitchers are also named in the final chapter. The inclusion of Paige is admirable since the vast majority of his career was played in the Negro Leagues. Disappointingly, his vital statistics and greatest feats are not capsulized, although those of the other players are included. While statistics from the Negro Leagues are sketchy and incomplete, there's plenty known about Paige's career. Black-and-white photographs along with watercolor illustrations are plentiful though indistinct. An additional purchase for collections in which baseball books are in demand. --Tom S. Review

"The artwork adds drama and a vintage flavor to this collection of pitcher profiles, presented in large, clear type. Sports fans will like the lively text, which is filled with good game color and intriguing anecdotes."--Booklist.

This review is from: Baseball's Greatest Pitchers (Step into Reading, Step 4, paper) (Paperback)
If you're looking for a book to share and read this summer for that little leaguer in your family, I recommend this one. It includes pictures and a short piece on past and not-so-old pitching greats like Leroy Robert (Satchel) Paige, Walter Perry Johnson, Nolan Ryan and Tom Seaver, just to name a few. I found it to be an interesting read, and loved being able to share it with my grandson. It's noted as being for ages 4-9, but I found it more for the 6-9 age group (my 7yr old grandson loved it). There are other books in this same series, and as this one was a winner, the rest are on my to-buy list.
