4.0 out of 5 stars Great book on hermeneutics

3.0 out of 5 stars Basic Bible Interpretation
I purchased the book for a class. It is a little hard to read. It is not what I expected. It has been helpful in some ways. I have never heard some the terms used to explain how the bible is interpreted. It has been interesting.

4.0 out of 5 stars Great book on hermeneutics, December 29, 2008
This review is from: Basic Bible Interpretation (Hardcover)
I just finished this book at the direction of my pastor and I am very glad I did. It was a very worthwhile read.

Now, the main reason I gave it four stars is that I am comparing it to "Grasping God's Word" by Duval and Hays which I consider a better treatment of the subject. The main difference is that Zuck lays out the pattern of observation, interpretation, application. Whereas Duval and Hays break interpretation into three steps: differences between then and now (river), crossing those differences (bridge), and what it means today (our town). Zuck has these three points but does not lay them out as clearly.

Also Zuck's book is very dense, while simultaneously not hard to read. Which is both good and bad. Zuck also gives point-blank analysis of why he considers dispensationalism more correct than covenant theology. If you are not aware of this debate this part will seem a bit odd, and if you are a covenant theologian you might be insulted. He does something similar with premillennialism compared to amillennialism and postmillennialism.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Must Own Resource for Bible Readers, February 9, 2009

Of all the books I've read on Bible study and interpretation this one is by far my favorite. It is highly readable and the concepts are applicable. You feel like you walk away with something tangible at the end of each chapter. There are many books on Bible study methods and interpretation but many of them are dated not so much in their content but more so in their writing style and terminology. Many of the older books on this subject are riddled with 1950s era vernacular and filled with grammatical minutiae but not Zuck's book. This is a gem amidst the growing number of pop theology books and I highly recommend this as a staple in your Bible study resource collection.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Must for Every Bible Believing Christian!, May 25, 2009
This review is from: Basic Bible Interpretation (Hardcover)
I got this book because it is used for the Hermeneutics class at my Bible college. It's the second book I own on the subject and without a doubt my favorite. It's explains things in plain language and makes the topic very understandable. If you read and study this book you will be able to interpret the Bible correctly and it will really open up your eyes to many truths. I highly recommend it!

5.0 out of 5 stars Great book, January 8, 2012
This review is from: Basic Bible Interpretation (Hardcover)
I found this book very helpful in every area of Bible interpretation that I know of at this point. I am writing a chapter by chapter summary that many may find helpful. It is not a spoiler, but a general idea of what is covered. If you would like to see up to chapter 7, i will finish the rest very soon. You can find it here: www.partnering4japan.com. It should be one of the first posts, but you may need to click on "Books" located on the right hand side. it would be to much to put here. The offer is open. I do love how he puts examples and problems at the end of each chapter to work through. Good book!

Nice condition. Helpful insight can be a bit dry and complicated but very good tool to interpret bible. Roy Zuck is very good author. Some of his doctrinal points go against my beliefs but it makes sense how he is coming to his conclusions.

5.0 out of 5 stars I love this book, September 10, 2011

I am going through seminary right now and studying hermeneutics. I absolutely LOVE this book. It is so interesting and relevant to those studying theology. It makes you think about aspects of the Bible you may never have thought of when interpreting. Bible interpretation is such a key component when studying and learning how to apply the Bible to our lives as well as growing closer to God. The key is seeking the meaning and not creating a meaning of your own as you read the Bible. It is dangerous how some people take the Bible and use it to create their own meaning beneficial to what message they want to send out, ignoring the truth that it really entails. With this book, I am learning that the Bible must be interpreted correctly in order to truly understand the meaning.

5.0 out of 5 stars The Best Basic Text to Date, October 25, 2001
Zuck's work in this book is excellent! He is in-line with Ramm's "Protestant Biblical Interpretation," but more up to date.

Of all the books I've come across on how to study the Bible, this one is the most in-depth. A great resource for improving personal Bible interpretation skills or for teaching others.

This is a great book. Very easy to read and understand and provides an in-depth explanatoin on how to interpret the Bible. Using it for my Master's course. Many eye-opening sections that made me aware of things in the Scriptures I was not even remotely aware of.
