Editorial Reviews

The Magoo's third and final album from 1968, by the original line up, is hailed by the critics as the band's creative peak. Absurd material like 'President's Council On Psychedelic Fitness' and the scary 'Scarecrow's Love Affair' complete a provocative original set of looney tunes, with six bonus tracks concluding this digipak limited reissue. Repertoire. 2004.

5.0 out of 5 stars Basic NYC psychedelic garage rock, March 22, 2005
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Basic Blues Magoos (Audio CD)
The BLUES MAGOOS were some creative young people from the NYC area, that had a nice run of 3 albums, with some songs getting stuck in NUGGETS, and other compilations. (In particular, Psychedelic Lollipop's "TOBACCO ROAD".) Their sound, with heavey organ, was not far from what you might expect from "Vanilla Fudge", except that they wrote all their own material. This is their third album, and a fun piece of musical history, from beginning to end. I was 20, and in college back in the 80s, when my cousin gave me her copy. I threw on headphones, because the production values rely on bouncing sounds left to right channel, and smoked a bit, to get the full effect. Many of the songs, have lots of very ACIDIC overdubs, like the freaky CHICKEN WIRE LADY, some have super lyrics, as in "I CAN HEAR THE GRASS GROW". But, my favorite track, was a little piece on side two of the LP, "SUBLIMINAL SONIC LAXATIVE". I was pretty out of it, when this "Song" came on. It's nothing but 60 seconds of a 60 hertz hum. (Just a low drone.) However, at the end of the LP track, it skipped, and I didn't know it. I sat there listening to a low HUM for about 5 to 6 minutes, totally BLOWN AWAY by the minimalism, the fluxus influences, the mystical zen koan of a single tone stretched to infinity. But, I did catch on, and realized the LP was skipping. ITS SO SAD, that in the age of CDs, you can't have experiences like that. (Unless you buy the CD, program it to repeat the SUPLIMINAL SONIC LAXITIVE song 5-6 times, and invite your friends for some minimalistic freakouts of your own.) What I'm getting at, is that the album is a TRIP, with plenty of surprises, and nifty production tricks. It's not the Velvet Underground, but it sure beats VANILLA FUDGE, or IRON BUTTERFLY. It would have been interesting to hear where this band would have gone from here. If you like this music, or this band, you will definately enjoy the CD. PEACE AND LOVE MY GROOVY FRIENDS.

MY FIRST EXPOSURE TO THE BLUES MAGOOS WAS IN THE EARLY 80S WITH PSYCHEDELIC LOLLIPOP. ALL OF MY FRIENDS WERE INTO SABBATH ETC BUT EVERYONE I TURNED ON TO THIS LP THEY LIKED IT.THEN I FINALLY GOT IT ON CD A TWO ON ONE CD LOLLIPOP WITH ELECTRIC COMIC BOOK. COMIC BOOKS COOL BUT THE WEAKEST OF THE BIG THREE MAGOOS CDS. THEN I BOUGHT A COMPILATION CALLED KALEIDESCOPIC COMPENDIUM WHICH HAD SOME TRACKS FROM BASIC BLUES MAGOOS ON IT. THEY WERE GREAT SO I FOUND A COPY ON LP TILL THE CD WAS FINALLY RELEASED. NOW MY CD WAS RELEASED IN AUSTRALIA ON PROGRESSIVE LINE.IT WAS THE FIRST CD RELEASE OF BASIC AND ITS 24 BIT DIGITALLY REMASTERED THE SOUND QUALITY IS EXCELLENT. HERES A RUN DOWN ON THE TRACKS 1.SYBIL GREEN. A GREAT SONG ABOUT A HIPPY CHICK IN THE LIBRARY 2.I CAN HEAR THE GRASS GROW. A OK SONG 3.ALL THE BETTER TO SEE YOU WITH.BOUT THE SAME 4.YELLOW ROSE. A FREAK OUT 9.THERE SHE GOES. ANOTHER WINNER. 10.ACCIDENTAL MEDITATION. FILLER 11.YOURE GETTING OLD. ONE OF MY ALL TIME FAVORITE SONGS. 12. CHICKEN WIRE LADY. I THINK ITS ABOUT A OLD LADY HANDING OUT NICKLE BAGS LOL WELL THATS WHAT THE LYRICS SAY.ANYWAY THIS ALBUM RULES FOR 60S ROCK ITS NOT SUPER HEAVY NOR IS IT SUPER LIGHT BUT FOR SURE THIS ALBUM IS DYNOMITE! 4.0 out of 5 stars Nice, November 8, 2005
This review is from: Basic Blues Magoos (Audio CD)
I have been a Blues Magoos fan for some time now, and have their first 2 albums. I couldnt find their 3rd album (Basic) anywhere, then i finally got a hold of it. Its a great album! All of the songs are good. The bonus tracks are kind of worthless, but besides that this album is a must for any Blues Magoos fans!
