Book Description

October 2008
We must commit ourselves, heart and mind, soul and will, personally and unreservedly, to Jesus Christ. We must humble ourselves before him. We must trust him as our Savior and submit to him as our Lord; and then go on to take our place as loyal members of the church and responsible citizens in the community. This is basic Christianity, the theme of this book. With these words, world-renowned preacher John Stott embarks on a compelling study that first defends the basic claims of Christianity and then defines the proper outworkings of those main beliefs in the daily lives of believers. Here is a sound, sensible guide for all who are seeking an intellectually satisfying presentation of the Christian faith. Named one of the Top 100 Books of the Millennium by World magazine and listed among Christianity Todays Top 100 Books of the 20th Century, Basic Christianity has had huge impact on countless readers worldwide over the past fifty years. This special new edition continues the Stott legacy.

5.0 out of 5 stars The Christian Life: An introduction, August 20, 2011
This review is from: Basic Christianity (Paperback)
Who is Christ? Why is he important? What does it mean to be a Christian? In his famous book, "Basic Christianity," John Stott introduces the Christian faith.

Stott skillfully unfolds the "basics" of Christianity by first explaining the need to base our understanding on the infallible, Word of God. He then tells us the story of Jesus Christ: his claims, his character, and his resurrection.

But why do we need Jesus? What did he come to do? Stott lovingly, but boldly confronts us with our sin; with our actions that subvert and antagonize the Divine Creator.

And then the Good News. Through the life, death and resurrection of Jesus, we can be made right before the Judge of the world.

Perhaps best of all, Stott concisely explains that the Christian life is demanding. It is costly. It is difficult. Yet it is uniquely fulfilling and wonderful.

The last chapter of the book explains what it means to be a Christian in more detail; our privileges (relationship) and our obligations (growth).

If you are looking for an illuminating introduction to Christianity: read "Basic Christianity." If you know Christ already, Stott's book will be an encouraging reminder of the great love of God to those who believe.

I really like this book because it explains very clearly the elements of the Gospel and what they look like in everyday living as a true Christian. Contrasts are made between how a true Christian heart, lifestyle and priorities compare with a person who calls himself a Christian, but is living for things that are temporary. As I read through this book, I found myself thinking deeper about my lifestyle and beliefs and how they compared to those of a true repentant Christian.
