This is the greatest book for Pharmacology!!!!!!,
By A Customer
This review is from: Basic & Clinical Pharmacology (Paperback)
This book was my bible for Pharmacology. Even though "Goodman and Gillman" contains everything there is to know about the subject, which medical school student needs to know all of that. The book first starts each chapter with a review of fundamental physiology of the normal body. Next it describes the drug and its effects on the body. Next comes the clincal pharamcology of the drugs. The understanding of pharmacology from reading this book is unparalleled.

WELL WORTH THE PRICE,
By reviewer (Zurich, Switzerland.) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Basic & Clinical Pharmacology (Paperback)
The "Basic & Clinical Pharmacology" may not be the most comprehensive and the most detailed single-volume text available on Pharmacology, but it has a lot of positive attributes. It is straightforward, well-illustrated, and ranks among the lowest-priced voluminous books that contains all the essentials a clinical student or doctor may need.

best practical pharm text out there,
By ... "vilbs" (Montreal) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Basic & Clinical Pharmacology (Paperback)
This book has been a great reference for me as I've gone through medical school. Clear, well written, and with excellent illustrations, the information is easily accessible and quite practical. It may be a little advanced for beginner students, but it's an absolute must have reference for someone with a need to know pharmacology.

perfect for my needs,
By Doc Dave "Doc Dave" (Georgia) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Basic & Clinical Pharmacology, Ninth Edition (Paperback)
The content of this book is well-suited to my needs. Although it is smaller (and much less expensive) than Goodman and Gillman's, it usually contains at least the level of detail that I am looking for, and sometimes more. When things I need to know are not covered, I look to research articles and reviews in the literature to find what I need, because they are generally the kinds of things that are not covered in any of the pharmacology textbooks. I am sure that for some it does pay off to have a fatter pharmacology reference on hand, but for me Katzung's Basic and Clinical Pharmacology has been a great choice.

An excellent addition to any medical student's collection,
By A Customer
This review is from: Basic & Clinical Pharmacology (Paperback)
Keeping true to the reputation of Lange Medical textbooks, this newest edition of the book provides an in-depth coverage of the subject without truly overwhelming the reader. Up-to-date and well cross-referenced, it is of value to both students and practitioners, including dosage schedules, indications, and contraindications, with an interesting chapter on drug abuse as well as useful information on drug interactions. Well worth buying.

Awful,
By L Grayson (ohio) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Basic & Clinical Pharmacology, Ninth Edition (Paperback)
This text is required at my medical school. The text is dense and unapproachable, but that isn't my main complaint-the organization is TERRIBLE. One drug can be covered in multiple different chapters, but none of the chapters really have a great description! For example, B blockers are covered under "Autonomic Drugs", "Anti-Hypertensive Agents", and "Heart Failure Drugs"... just for starters! Anywhere you can use a B blocker, there's a separate discussion. Just give me ONE chapter on B blockers that actually talks about all of their uses!
If you do have to use this awful book, be advised that the first section of each chapter is a review of the pertinent physiology. If you need to go over this again to understand how the drugs will act, then use your favorite physio book, not Katzung.

Good Pharmacology review, without great detail,
By Pharmer Tom (US of A) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Basic & Clinical Pharmacology (Paperback)
This book is basically a summary of Goodman and Gilman, without all the unnecessary detail. A good review text, and lots easier to carry around. Great for quick look-ups.

The Best Single Volume On Pharmacology,
By A Customer
This review is from: Basic & Clinical Pharmacology (Paperback)
This is a wonderful book. Now in its seventh edition, it includes great details on physiological mechanisms. Highly recommended, even over Goodman and Gilman.

The "Bible" for Medical school pharmacology,
By A Customer
This review is from: Basic & Clinical Pharmacology (Paperback)
Katzung is brilliant. This text was an absolute bible for my med school pharmacology course & on rotations. If it's not in the Katzung book you probably don't need to know it. An absolute must to do well on the boards.

Not Awful, Not Great,
By
This review is from: Basic & Clinical Pharmacology, Ninth Edition (Paperback)
There are many good things to say about this text. It is through, has great cross-references, and is relatively cheap. Sadly, however, that is pretty much where the positive ends and the negative begins.
As has been said before, the orgainzation is pretty terrible. No one section fully covers all they want to say about a particular drug, and most medical schools present it in a different fashion. I spend half my time flipping around finding the relevant section about which I want to read. Also, is it too much to ask that medical textbooks be properly bound? A flimsy paperback with cheap binding simply won't stand up to the rigors of lugging this book back and forth to class every day. Not Recommended. |
