This book is a great resource for making coding more user friendly. It is well written and has great examples on better ways to find the codes. I'm not a big fan of HCPCS coding but this book helped better understand the methodology.

Required reading for the AHIMA Basic Coding Cluster 3, this book literally walks you through the CPT and HCPCS coding processes used by physician offices and hospitals. When used with the required companion workbook, there are PLENTY of practice exercises to bring the concepts alive for the student. The book arrived in "Good" condition, which means it had some minor cosmetic scuffs on the cover. Otherwise, it appeared to be brand-new.

Before purchasing this book, make sure you use the 2012 CPT codebook. I try to be as current as possible, so I ordered the updated 2013 CPT from the AMA and some of the activities do not align. For example, a CPT code that was "New" in 2012 (indicated in the CPT Codebook with a large bullet), is just a standard code in the 2013 edition. This may cause a few incorrect answers when taking the online tests for AHIMA, so be aware!

I needed this book for class, as another reviewer mentioned, this is more for intermidated experience coders as then more for students. But hopefully this will help enhance the skills or knowledge of the future beginner coder. I would suggest to look around for more books involving this learning course topic. But still good to keep in book collection, the updated version is also available.

I was sent 2012 and actually needed 2013, therefore I had to return it. It would seem that Amazon would realize that in these situtions, the latest edition would be needed or they would have contacted me to confirm the year.
