4.0 out of 5 stars From an Enlisted Sailor who knows

I wanted something really basic - for a novice. This book was too detailed for me.

This review is from: Basic Electricity (Dover Books on Electrical Engineering) (Paperback)
This book is a fantastic reference guide to those interested in the field of Electricity. I found it extremely useful, both as a guideline for choosing my rating in the Navy's Nuclear Power Program, and as a basic reference guide in application. It is well thought out, and, laid out in a logical straight forward matter. This book, coupled with some basic knowledge of electricity, will give you a broad theoretical background in this fundamental subject.

I have been an Avionics Tech. for 30 years and bought this book for my son-in-law. I have had a copy and used it for years to brush up on sometimes forgoten electrical principals. This book is so good that the aircraft technical schools issue it to aviation mechanics for the AC and DC basics. If you want to understand electricity, motors, generators, AC/DC theory...This book is for you!!!!!

.

This is the same material used to train ALL of the technicians in ALL of the electronics ratings in the US Navy. I used this book, or one of its earlier versions, when I rode a Submarine in the Eighties.

The US Navy is the most technologically advanced combat force in human history. And this is the material used to train their techs.

'Nuff said.

I am a 76 year-old man who tries to maintain brain function by studying schollarly topics. DC electricity is the present obsession,so the knowledge can be applied to an entheusiasm for solar panels.
I bought several texts to be able to benefit from different author's versions of how to solve the variety of math problems. I was never satisfied with any of them, so kept looking.
On Amazon Books was listed an old US Navy Textbook, used by the entire Seventh Fleet, which included my ship, during the Korean war.
Feeling good about the idea, I purchased it.
The other texts, all partly read, now sit on a shelf.
The Navy book, talks to your thinking like one man speaking to another, covers EVERY topic in such a thorough manner that I never have used any of the other resource books . . . which were all originally bought, one at a time to be the only text.
The book speaks logic and reason to this old mind, and I would recommend it to anyone who wants to be as good as the military Men and Woman who run our present day technology in the war zones.

5.0 out of 5 stars Theory Combined with Practical Applications, February 18, 2008
This review is from: Basic Electricity (Dover Books on Electrical Engineering) (Paperback)
I have a degree in electrical engineering and is no stranger to text books on the subject of electrical circuits and power distribution. This book serves as an awesome guide that can compete with any book written on electric circuits. It also touches on three phase transformer configurations and ac/dc generators and motors.

As for the guy that claim this book is based on outdated methods of analysis and circuit components and devices, I strongly disagree. Transformers, Ac generators, DC generators and motors are used in the power industry as well as other industrial settings as of today and is not on the verge of becoming extinct no time soon.

To not understand the material is one thing, but to write a nasty review out lack of knowledge oncerning the subject is ridiculous. My opinion this is a great book.

5.0 out of 5 stars Easy to understand lessons on electricity, May 8, 2009
This review is from: Basic Electricity (Dover Books on Electrical Engineering) (Paperback)
This is a really good textbook for the person who is just geeting in to the field of electricity. I am studying to become an Aircraft Maintenance Engineer and I found this book extremely helpfull. It doesn't go in to too much depth which is good because you don't get confused with what you are tryingn to learn. All in all, a really good book.

5.0 out of 5 stars Get the other Electronics books too !, January 29, 2011

I'm an ex submariner and a former 1st class Electronics technician. I went through both ET "A" and ET "B" school at the Naval training center at the Great Lakes base in Illinois. If you want to study and learn Electronics there are 3 books you need...this one Basic electricity ( you need to master this before you study the next 2 books which are "Basic electronics" ( this is virtually the identical material used in the Navy's 38 week ET "A" School and then the "Advanced electronics "book ( this one is the ET "B" school curriculum) I believe all 3 are available here at Amazon. The Navy did an incredibly good job with this material as it's core of their electronics schools which by the way, were taught by civilian electrical engineers from the staff of the university of Chicago's electrical engineering dept.
If you can master the material in these books you could easily stand toe to toe with any Electronics engineering college graduate anywhere

5.0 out of 5 stars Detailed, November 18, 2010

This review is from: Basic Electricity (Dover Books on Electrical Engineering) (Paperback)
I bougth this book because when I started to study analog & digital electronics I did not know anything about electricity. Just Ohm's law..
Now, after a few weeks that I have it in my technical library, I can say that I know MUCH MORE about that.
The contents are very well explained in detail with a lot of pictures as examples, from Resisteances, Parallel & Series Circuits Analisys, Capacitors, Impedance, DC & AC, AC & DC motors etc.
I found the book very easy & clear to read.
Also, a good thing I immediatamently noticed, the original current flow direction is used in all the book, from - to + , not as many books use the conventional flow direction.
Strongly suggested.
