Editorial Reviews

Review

The camping volume was the first entry I read in this series and I confess that I was not expecting much in the way of new information in an introductory volume. Surprise! The book is literally jammed with useful tips and techniques presented in a friendly manner. Jacobson releases one bit of practical info one right after the other, machine gun style, and provides the buyer his money's worth and then some. -- Outdoor Gear --This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title.

From the Back Cover

In the words of Cliff Jacobson, 'Skills are more important than things.' This new edition is packed with essential information for the camping novice, as well as a quick refresher for the veteran, with an emphasis on the all-important skills. Discover how to select and use your camping gear effectively, build a fire quickly and efficiently, even in wet weather, use the right cutting tools, cook quick and tasty meals in the outdoors, rig a snug camp with four basic knots and hitches, and use a map and compass to master the basics of backcountry navigation. With ample illustrations, it covers camping gear, how to select it and how to use it, including: how to measure a sleeping bag, what kinds of boots to look for, what kinds of packs to use, and what kind of ax is handy. Easy-to-use and portable, this book should be in every backpack. (5 7/16 X 8 7/16, 72 pages, color photos, black-and-white illustrations, appendix, index)

More About the Author

BIOGRAPHY
CLIFF JACOBSON

Cliff Jacobson is one of North America's most respected outdoor writers and wilderness guides.

Each summer, for more than 30 years, Cliff organized and led canoe trips for the Science Museum of Minnesota into the wilds of northern Canada--paddling many rivers above the Arctic Circle. A retired environmental science teacher (34 years!), Cliff is strongly committed to the ethic of "leave no trace" camping.

Cliff's unique methods are proven by the sweat of pack and paddle and are reminiscent of the days when skills were more important than things. Cliff is a popular speaker; he has presented hundreds of seminars at stores, schools, colleges and Universities in the U.S., Canada and the United Kingdom.

Cliff is the author of more than a dozen popular books on outdoor skills. His flagship book, Expedition Canoeing, 20th Anniversary Edition, has been called the most authoritative resource available for canoeing the bush rivers of northern Canada. Cliff developed and wrote the Orienteering/Map and Compass, and wilderness ethics materials for the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources. His unique "Wilderness Meal" activity--which simulates a canoe trip to the Boundary Waters Canoe Area--is among the most popular environmental education activities of all time. It's detailed in his book, Boundary Waters Canoe Camping. Cliff was the chief consultant for the canoeing section in the recent edition of the Boy Scout Field Book (Boy Scouts of America). His popular "ninety minute Forgotten Skills" video (DVD) details the most important campcraft procedures.

Cliff Jacobson is a Distinguished Eagle Scout, a recipient of the American Canoe Association's prestigious Legends of Paddling Award and a member of the ACA Hall of Fame. His hobbies include canoeing and camping (of course!), precision rifle shooting (powder-cartridge and air guns) and driving his 14 year old little red roadster on curvy roads with the top down. He and his wife, Sue Harings, were married in 1992 on a canoe trip down the Hood River (Canada) north of the Arctic Circle. The fully story is in his book, Expedition Canoeing.

4.0 out of 5 stars Very nice book for the price, February 2, 2003
This review is from: Basic Essentials Camping, 2nd (Basic Essentials Series) (Paperback)
Camping is actually a pretty broad term anymore... People are tent campers, car campers, backpackers, canoe campers, and on and on. This leans more towards backpacking, and does a nice job squeezing in many of the most important points for beginners in a short book of 67 pages for a great price. He helps you chose your gear such as a camp stove, sleeping bag, tent, knives, clothing, boots, pack, etc. The book probabley concentrates on prparing food more than anything, and that is appropriate considering where you will be. He also helps put together a packing list, ideas for cooking and recipes, and many important safety tips.

This is a nice supplemental item for your library of books on the subject if you have one and enjoy collecting them as I do. In fact it is part of a whole series of these little books in the Basic Essential Library. ...
