1.0 out of 5 stars On the edge, maybe - on the nose, definitely!, August 21, 2000

This review is from: Basic Essentials Snowboarding, 2nd Edition (Basic Essentials) (Paperback)
I bought three books on boarding and this one was so bad its only use was as joke material. I entertained my wife with its examples of really bad writing - take for example the section on 'Timing' - "one of the most elusive skills to learn" says McMullen - well folks he's going to keep it that way by only spending 4 lines on the subject - and Hey I've already let one of them out of the bag! Nor will 'Timing' make it into the index (keep it mysterious I say!). Tell me how an author thinks it makes sense to have 7 pages on stretching with photos (yes I know it's important but really ...) and two paragraphs on dealing with 'Ice, Crud and Slush'! Our favourite though was, "A good way to improve your timing is to follow riders who ride well. Study their technique and position, not their style [HUH! He's lost me but now it gets incredulous] Ask them to go slow so you can observe closely." Well folks aren't you better off for reading that! Oh, by the way you just read the other 3 lines on dealing with timing. The most critical part of boarding - turning - gets two paragraphs ... well at least you'll be well stretched. See the 'Competitive Snowboarding' chapter for a real hoot - a page intro followed by an interview with somebody who's done one too many head plants and that's it! This book is not basic, it is the level before that, you know, learning to read, write ... My advice? You'd do just as well asking boarders on the slope to slow down so you can watch (their technique but not their style) and save your $$... unless all you're really looking for is a good laugh.
