bad item
This is neither basic or essential; I was very disappointed as it offers nothing for the beginning GPS user; it seems to be more of an advanced compass course.

I don't have a GPS but intend to buy one in the near future. This inexpensive little book provided me with the basic information that I will need in order to make an informed purchasing decision. This book also includes several examples on the different uses of a GPS, i.e., different circumstances. These examples will likely prove more useful to me when I actually have a GPS in my possession to play with. I believe that the less knowledgeable a person is in this field, the more useful this book will be. The writing is clear and the information is well presented.

Clear, Concise and Helpful, May 18, 2009
This review is from: Basic Essentials Using GPS, 2nd (Basic Essentials Series) (Paperback)
This is a terrific practical guide for hikers and backpackers who know how to use a map and compass and want to employ a GPS receiver as an additional helping tool. If you are looking for a book about the glamors of using a GPS for geocaching, this is probably not the book for you. But if you are looking for a practical, short guide to land navigation using a combination of map, compass and GPS, read this book. It taught me that a GPS does not replace map and compass, but rather is a different tool altogether that is to be used in conjunction with a map and compass. This book contains great practical information about when to turn your GPS on, when to leave it off to save battery power, and how to use a GPS with a topo map.
