I'm a new ESL teacher, teaching beginning English speakers. This book is an excellent resource, very systematic and organized with excellent progression of topics, explaining in baby steps, then providing work sheets. It's excellent for ESL teachers and students.

I have been teaching ESL in many forms to many nationalities since '94. In all of that time there are several books that I swear by (& not at ;-) for helping me & my students - this is one of them.
This is very specific & to the point, good examples & I rarely find errors. I have a CD in my copy of the book, it is really useful for the student to be able to listen to it & learn from it, whether I am available or not.

My other ESL 'go to' books are; OPD / Oxford Picture Dictionary 9780194700597, Year in the life of an ESL student 9781604945348 (best I've found for idioms), Clear Grammar (the whole series of 4 sets of book + workbook) 9780472032419, & this one - Basic Grammar.

So far, after many years of trial & error, these are the nucleus of my ESL teaching library. I would also caution anyone to ensure the student adds an excellent physical bilingual dictionary - not just use the online dictionaries. I push the student to learn some online - especially sound, but also ensure (through questioning, essays & example) that they learn independent vocabulary & can utilize that vocab knowledgeably in essays, etc.

Enjoy!

As an ESL/EFL teacher, I have found the entire Grammar In Use series to be extraordinarily helpful. If a student is having trouble with a specific grammatical issue, I often steer them toward specific pages in these books. The grammar is well presented without being so thorough as to bog a student down with too much information. The structure of the book is excellent: grammar information on one page, grammar exercises using that information on the very next page, repeat.

For this price, you can't really go wrong.

This is a great book to help in reinforcing English, the self study reference is a great help almost as if my teacher is assisting me as I study independently. I would recommend this book to anyone trying to improve their skills with English.

If you are from another country, and want to learn the tricks about American English grammar, this book is for you. Contrary to what some people say, this Third Edition brings New and extra Units. Basic Grammar in Use, Third edition, is the lower-level text in the Grammar in Use series. It focuses on the fundamental grammar structures normally taught in basic or introductory courses. This new edition contains updated explanations paired with additional practice. The book is available both with and without answers, so it can be used in class or for self-study. The new CD-ROM offers hundreds of practice exercises, challenging games, a progress report, and a create-your-own test feature. Everything is easy to print and, the software lets you even record your own voice for you to compare with the audio in the exercises available - and that will help you improve your pronunciation. The workbook provides students with further practice opportunities in grammar, listening, writing, test preparation, pronunciation comparison. When you lear what is in this book your English will be comprehensible in the areas of grammar, listening, writing and, if you practice with a tutor or teacher, your speaking, too.

Key features

The book is slightly larger in size to accommodate extra explanation and practice.
There are two new pages of Additional Exercises and some reorganization of units.
The new interactive CD-ROM includes appealing and challenging exercises, progress reports, games, a create-your-own tests feature, a grammar reference, and a built-in dictionary.
