Editorial Reviews

Review

The text has very good information. Covers material well. - Susan Erue, BSN, MS, PHDc; Iowa Weslyan College

I would recommend and use this text as a resource for any infection control nurse or infection control program. The depth is good-especially as resource material that could be used in sections for inservice material. - Marie Moran, RN, SDC

I think this book could be used in a variety of settings as a basic infection reference. The book was well written. It presented questions to think about in a way that made thinking about infection control more broad than just treating and avoiding infections. The human interest stories put a face on the impact of infectious disease in current time. - Pat Trapp, MS: Staff Educator

5.0 out of 5 stars Was I supposed to have learned this in school?, June 15, 2008
This review is from: Basic Infection Control for Healthcare Providers (Paperback)
If you want a book that tells you everything from what T cell is to the incubation period for measles, this book is it.

I learned so much information from this book that I though I "knew" except that when I started reading, I realized I didn't really know. I have always used the words "infectious disease" interchangeably with "communicable disease" and I don't see how I could have gotten this far in my career without knowing something as simple as how to differentiate the two!

Honestly, I would probably buy the whole book just for the chapter on immunity. It was the easiest explanation I've ever seen. Was I supposed to have learned this in school? I sure didn't! I'm not dumb, I'm just not smart enough to get all of the complicated non-clinical mumbo-jumbo. This book made it entirely readable and comprehensible.

I bought this book because I felt I had to. I teach a breastfeeding and lactation course, and I was struggling with simple issues like routes of transmission, and the effectiveness of simple actions to protect the newborn from the mother's disease. I ended up being really intrigued by the material presented, including special features, such as the "Alerts" and the "Case Studies" and the "Newsmakers." Trust me, this author has a great way of making the dull and complicated seem interesting and easy to understand.

3.0 out of 5 stars Good but Outdated, September 13, 2010

This review is from: Basic Infection Control for Healthcare Providers (Paperback)
This is a good basic book that does not go into too much detail about any of the subjects. It tends to discuss the governmental programs a bit too much in my opinion. The book is quickly becoming outdated while discussing certain contemporary infections (doesn't include anything on the recent influenza epidemics)and needs to be updated. This field changes quickly and this book needs an update. Otherwise the book is good for a basic outline and 1 credit classes. The problem is there aren't many other books like this one for this subject.
