Psychopathology is a discipline in search of a framework within which data from sciences such as biology, psychology, sociology, anthropology, and ethology can be integrated. This volume provides the first in-depth discussion of basic conceptual and methodological issues that must be resolved before such a framework can be constructed.

Editorial Reviews

Review

"BASIC ISSUES IN PSYCHOPATHOLOGY lives up to its promise. By providing a thorough review of the current status of many of the central issues in the field, BASIC ISSUES will be very useful for researchers and for teachers. The authors for the various chapters know their respective fields very well." --Peter M. Lewinsohn, Ph.D., Oregon Research Institute

"In the past twenty five years the scientific study of psychopathology has again picked up the pace that was for so long interrupted by the dominance of psychodynamic concepts. Having survived the hegemony of an ideology in which all of the important questions had been answered, psychopathology is now one of the most intellectually lively and challenging areas of human inquiry. Contemporary psychopathologists draw upon, and contribute to, a spectrum of disciplines that range from the philosophy of science, through general human psychology, psychobiology, the neurosciences, and genetics, to name only the most prominent.

Charles Costello's BASIC ISSUES IN PSYCHOPATHOLOGY provides an essential service to the serious psychopathologist. The challenges faced by contemporary investigators of human abnormal behavior require a thorough understanding of fundamental principles from a number of fields. Editor Costello has assembled an impressive group of contributions to this understanding; they range across the relevant disciplines, and cover the classic sequences from diagnosis to pathology to treatment. Scientific psychopathology has indeed come of age; the appearance of this book adds further testimony to the sophistication with which its tasks can now be approached." --Brendan A. Maher, Ph.D., Harvard University
