The book is tiny - around 6inches by 4. It is very old (first published 1999. the author keeps referring to such cutting edge technology as the Atari!) and a little too basic and generic for my use.

I bought this book because I was keen to connect my PC to my keyboard but had no idea what I would need in the way of hardware or software. The book covers all the areas that you need to know about to get going in the MIDI world. The information is presented in a way that is neither too simplistic to be useful nor too complex to be off-putting. The style of writing made it possible to read the book from beginning to end and not just to use it as a reference, although the well defined chapters and comprehensive index make it very easy to find particular parts again.

This book has met my needs 100%.

5.0 out of 5 stars All Musicians Can Benefit from MIDI, March 20, 2000

"Basic MIDI" is a great primer to the in's & out's (& thru's) of MIDI as a tool for any experienced or aspiring musician.

The book itself is a pocket-sized reference that has current information regarding the technology and proven techniques that professionals are using today.

Paul White has written book that is very easy to read and understand, and he takes the time to explain the technical terms as he introduces them.

Again, I feel this book is a must-have for any musician and is the first on the subject to cover such a wide-variety of instrumentation that MIDI has now become a part of.

5.0 out of 5 stars Good start for the clueless, March 5, 2001
By A Customer
This review is from: Basic MIDI (Music Technology Series) (Paperback)
For a total MIDI beginner, this is a very good intro. I am an old ex pro musician who hasn't done anything musical for over 20 years and decided to try my hand at doing something on my iMac. This little book describes the terminology, software, hardware, etc., requirements that a beginner should be expected to know about. It allowed me to take my next step without feeling totally ignorant. Very basic, just like the title says.

First, I don't know why, but the book I recieved has a different Cover... But anyway, here my comments":

- Very easy to read and follow - Right to the point with with very well written and undestandable explanations. - Nice book to use as reference for beginners or intermediates like me. - As the name says, it's a it covers the "basics" of MIDI, and I haven't found a book that precise like this yet.

Something funny: The authors writes: "MIDI is no sound" but then at the appendix section under "Common Cable Connections" he illustrates all kinds of AUDIO cables.. NO MIDI cables ! :)

Anyway, if you are like me, a computer and musc lover, beginning to do some serious music work on a computer, this book will kick start you to the MIDI world.

5.0 out of 5 stars Gotta Get This!, July 6, 2004
This review is from: Basic MIDI (Music Technology Series) (Paperback)
If you're struggling to understand some or all aspects of MIDI, this is the book for you. It is written in standard, non-technical English for easy comprehension. You can learn the basics of MIDI to run a setup of MIDI devices in no time or for whatever application(s) you wish to use MIDI. This book also covers some basics of sequencing and synthesis that you can apply to your music. You simply cannot miss out on this great bargain.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great for musicians and multimedia programmers, May 3, 2006
This review is from: Basic MIDI (Music Technology Series) (Paperback)
I highly recommend this inexpensive little book for absolute beginners whether they be programmers or musicians. No real prior knowledge of music terminology is required to understand the simple but necessary questions and answers discussed in this book. The author also talks about basic connections to equipment for musicians and lists the various messages and codes that both musicans and programmers need to know. I needed this information to work with the Java Sound MIDI programming language features. I could find plenty of sample programs using these features, but the explanations were purely from a programmers point of view and I had no idea what the big picture was. This little book solved all of that. Its purpose is to only answer the "big picture" questions, so when you finish this book I suggest you pick up "The S.M.A.R.T. Guide to Producing Music with Samples, Loops, and MIDI". It is very comprehensive and although it is aimed at musicians, I've learned a lot about what musicians are looking for in terms of writing applications for them involving Java and MIDI.

I was concerned when I bought this MIDI to USB cable that its low price might suggest a cheap, low quality product. When I received the cable, I was happy to find it of quite good quality. Great quality when you consider the low price. When I tried to use it, however, I was bummed out to find that it did not appear to work. I spent about 4 hours trying to debug the problem without success. A week later, I was doing internet research on the MIDI to USB subject and found that several people had the same experience with other MIDI to USB cables and that Logitech web cams drivers conflicted with the Windows XP MIDI/USB software and prevented the MIDI from working. I removed all web cam software (including drivers), reconnected the cable and now everything works fine. Advice to buyers. Since the cable comes with limited hook-up instructions but nothing else, be prepared to do some internet research if you need to debug a situation where things aren't working. Better product instructions would be nice but at this price what can you expect.

1.0 out of 5 stars Book Not As Described, April 21, 2004
By A Customer
This review is from: Basic MIDI (Music Technology Series) (Paperback)
This book is barely bigger than your thumb. It doesn't even look like the picture on Amazon's page. If you are over 30 buy a microscope - you'll need it to try to read it. It won't lay flat to use a reference. The author should sue the publisher for incompetent packaging of what most others describe as a good book. I wouldn't know; I can't read it.
