4.0 out of 5 stars what i got was better than what i was looking for.
the problem with music recording and mixing is that everything is open to interpretation. unlike say... earth science where this is gravity (9.8) and it's constant and unbreakable, music has no strict rules. as such, this book is very informative but does not and can not give strict detail.

what i was looking for was a sort of cookbook that gives me different genres...

2.0 out of 5 stars Well intended, but dated and out of focus
White is a great writer, no doubt about it, but it seems that the editors pushed a little too far to present a title that fits in the hullabaloo about mixing. The market is hungry for books on mixing and that may be the reason for this book to exist. Almost a third of this very small book is just a glossary, and almost half of it is about recording, not mixing. If we take...

what i was looking for was a sort of cookbook that gives me different genres of music and there typical basic mixing position s from which i could create a derivative mix. what i got was a book that gives you enough information to let you make those pan, balance, eq, and effects decisions for yourself.

what i got was much better than what i was looking for!

5.0 out of 5 stars Finally a book that's practical and applicable., March 8, 2001

Get this book! This little book (literally - it's a little bigger than a palm pilot) is five chapters packed with 175 pages, including the glossary. It is worth more than books twice its size, with twice the content. I started in music doing rap, hiphop and electronica so I got my experience from doing talent shows, contests, and parties and later in college playing gigs in a band, and later going totally digital on a PC. I never went to school for this stuff, so what I wanted was some indepth tips and techniques to polish my sound. Most other books are extremely intellectual and contain very little practical-wise for someone who already has some experience. You'll learn all the correct words and terminology for what you've already done from experience. Now you can take a written test and pass with an A. But it won't help you recording wise. Also typical books will only give advice on your standard pop or rock recordings. I'm doing techno which pretty much goes by its own rules. No reverb on the bass track? Yeah right! This book gives you practical techniques, tips and advice on a whole lot of stuff!! Effects techniques, recording vocals, balance, mix automation and little tricks for getting around little shortcomings your gear may have. And it gives you alternatives for different styles of music. First I was a little nervous when I saw how little it was. And it came a big 'ole box. I was like, "oh no, I wasted my money again." But believe me this book delievers!! It gives new meaning to "put it in da mix!"

5.0 out of 5 stars A must have for all potential engineers and mixers!, February 14, 2001

This book is a must have for anyone who is interested in becoming or is an engineer/mixer. I have been a professional engineer/producer for 6 years and purchased this book for my girlfriend who's studing music technology, I read through with interest and found it to be very clearly laid out full of useful information for anyone involved in music production. It has been written so as not to be above anyones understanding and makes reference to the other books in the series with a brief explanation of the topic in question. All aspect of Mixing are approched including how to get the best recording before you consider the mixing process, arrangments and basic recording techniques for all instruments. My advice is to all musicians go and buy this book even if your not an engineer so as you may have an understanding of the whole concept. Excellent book very informative everyone buy it!!

4.0 out of 5 stars Great fundamentals, December 12, 2002
By A Customer
This review is from: Basic Mixing Techniques (Sound on Sound) (Paperback)
This book was extremely helpful. I've been doing radio production for years but never had any formal training in mixing, processing, etc. The specifics in this book helped me in so many ways, I wish that I'd known about it long ago. There are places where it doesn't go into enough detail but, it is great for getting a grip on the basics.

If we take the other third about automation off, we end up with almost no useful information. But it is Paul White, and everything that he talks about is right, but certainly not focused enough on the matter. To make matters worse, it was written in 2000, making it suffer from old age (eight years is a lot of time in mxing techniques).

4.0 out of 5 stars For ten bucks, you can't miss., March 1, 2001
This review is from: Basic Mixing Techniques (Sound on Sound) (Paperback)
This book is a small palm-size book which you can read in several hours. It reads well, the advice is sound and I found the answers to several questions, and several other suspicions (common sense items) were confirmed.

This book packs a whallop for the size it comes in. I would like to see this be a real 8.5 x 11 book. It was a heck of a lot more interesting that the "CD Home audio course" which I am returning. I'm keeping this one.

This book proves size does not matter. The content is solid and he didn't fill up a bunch of pages with common sense stuff.

Could use more illustrations, but then again it is a perspective book, not a tutorial.

5.0 out of 5 stars Good Starting Point To Learn Mixing Music, August 15, 2008

This review is from: Basic Mixing Techniques (Sound on Sound) (Paperback)
This is a real good starting point to learn the basic concepts to mixing your music, it's a small pocket guide easy to carry around and the table of contents is laid out efficiently for you to jump to that particular chapter if need be. You can read the entire book in one sit down or you can use as a basic reference to refresh your understanding in certain areas of Mixing.

I have other resources on this topic, but in this field you can't underestimate a book like this, because I've been involved in projects with so called "Mixing Experts" whose mixes sounded poorly, because they couldn't grasp the basic concepts, therefore, rendering a poor acoustical project.

Also found the Glossary Valuable as well, get this book and stick with the basics, as more advance books will be more understandable to you in the future. I Hope This Review Helps You. Good Luck.

3.0 out of 5 stars Not the holly grial, April 16, 2003
This review is from: Basic Mixing Techniques (Sound on Sound) (Paperback)
Well, I find that this book is really easy to read, and it probably is a good book if you know little about mixing, but to someone who has some knowledge on the subject, almost everything will sound familiar (at least). Also, if you're looking for a "cookbook" go find some other book, as this one hasn't fast and hard mixing rules.

Overall, it's a good book, but after reading so many positive reviews, I was expecting something else...
