Editorial Reviews

Review

“I could recommend Rosenbaum’s book for pharmacology students because it is written from  a perspective of drug action . . . Overall, this is a well-written introduction to PK/PD that may fill a small niche in a well-served market. “  (British Toxicology Society Newsletter, 1 June 2012)

"In summary, I believe that this book is successful in what it sets out to do. For those readers who are interested in getting to grips with the basics of the time course of onset, offset and extent of drug effects then this is the book for you. I am certainly recommending this book for my graduate students." (British Journal of Clinical Pharmacology, 2011)

"A readable font size, good quality paper and a stout binding make this an excellent offering ... This is an ideal textbook for those starting out on the pharmacokinetic trail and also for use as a reference book for those who delve occasionally into this subject." (International Society for the Study of Xenobiotics, 1 April 2012)

"In short, this is a thorough and well-designed presentation and development of key concepts in pharmacokinetics and pharmacodynamics. It is a very useful textbook, and one that I would be comfortable using in both medical and graduate teaching." (Doody's, 21 October 2011)

Review

"Unlike other basic textbooks that cover only pharmacokinetics, the author has done justice to the title of the book by covering pharmacodynamics. Pharmacodynamics is covered in greater depth than other books in the same category. What makes the book to stand out is that the author has nicely blended the concepts of receptor theory from classical pharmacology with the modern science of PK/PD.... The book truly helps readers to understand the science of pharmacokinetics and drug action. The Excel-based simulation exercises incorporated into the text helps the reader to put his/her learning into practice, albeit in a virtual environment.... The book is strongly recommended for use in undergraduate studies of PK/PD, and by those in drug research interested in having a basic understanding of the science of PK/PD."
Ene Ette, PhD, Anoixis Corporation

"Sara Rosenbaum's book is a thoroughly modern approach to pharmacokinetics and pharmacodynamics. It is well written and well thought out – a blend of pharmacokinetic-pharmacodynamic theory and modeling/analysis concepts. The pharmacodynamic models are up to date with recent advances in the field, such as tolerance, indirect, and basic disease progression models, being presented. The web page simulations were fun to play around with allowing the user to change the model parameters and see how the results change. Rather than being a dry subject with just endless equations, the connection between the web-based simulations and the book allows the reader to be engaged and understand the subject with greater ease."
Peter L. Bonate, PhD, author of Pharmacokinetic-Pharmacodynamic Modeling and Simulation

"Basic Pharmacokinetics and Pharmacodynamics: An Integrated Text Book and Computer Simulation" is a very finely crafted comprehensive introduction to PK/PD concepts and their practical applications using PK/PD simulations. Author covered both PK and PD in fair amount of details and further complemented them with PK/PD simulations (extremely helpful!!!) to maximize the understanding on how these concepts are implemented in real world scenarios. The book is organized in a thoughtful way with clear objectives and goals. The text is simple, clear and straight forward to follow. The author first provides thorough understanding of PK and then delves into PD followed by some advanced PK/PD models.
Author provided adequate number of equations and supportive derivations to clearly explain the mathematics behind useful PK/PD models. The appendices further emphasize on some useful calculations and practice sessions. Overall, all concepts are well explained and illustrated with PK/PD simulations. I highly recommend this book to graduate students, health care professionals, industrial pharmacologists and PK/PD scientists.

The book, Basic Pharmacokinetics and Pharmacodynamics: An Integrated Text Book and Computer Simulation, provides a scientific foundation for pharmacy and medical students, pharmacists, and scientists with suitable background who are interested in learning and understanding pharmacokinetics and pharmacodynamics (PK/PD). The presentation of the topics covered in the book is done in a manner that would motivate learners not just to learn the principles of PK/PD, but also to delve into the subject. It introduces the subject and gradually draws the reader into some depth of the subject.

Each chapter opens with an outline and objectives. This enables the reader know what he/she will learn from each chapter. This is an excellent feature that undergraduate students will find useful.

Unlike other basic textbooks that cover only pharmacokinetics, the author has done justice to the title of the book by covering pharmacodynamics. Pharmacodynamics is covered in greater depth than other books in the same category. What makes the book to stand out is that the author has nicely blended the concepts of receptor theory from classical pharmacology with the modern science of PK/PD. Thus, those with pure pharmacology training who want to expand their knowledge can do because concepts from classically pharmacology have been seamlessly weaved into the modern science of PK/PD. The book truly helps readers to understand the science of pharmacokinetics and drug action. The Excel-based simulation exercises incorporated into the text helps the reader to put his/her learning into practice, albeit in a virtual environment.

In summary, the content of the book justifies its title. It introduces and provides the foundation for understanding the science of PK/PD.

This book is extremely helpful, mostly if one is fighting with all pharmacology maths. All concepts are well explained, and new trends in basic pharmacology are also covered. Great book that even beginners can understand. One can even skip all the math stuff and still understand. The author is an amazing teacher !

To begin with, if big words, unexplained diagrams, unemphasized important concepts and unexplained processes frustrate and cause you long nights of studying, then here is why this book may be a great choice for you. Well, I am a pharmacy student who learns only when things are taught to me in a simple and clear manner. I do not randomly understand things on my own! (I hope we are all in the same boat) Upon opening this book, from page one, everything was explained. The author does not assume you know concepts such as rate processes, rather she explains them to you to assure that you know them and, at the same time, to refresh your memory of then! Everything the author discusses is explained in the book. Important concepts are repeated and emphasized....they will POP out at you! Diagrams to help you understand concepts are included numerous times per chapter, captions and explanations are included to guide you through the graphs/diagrams. The chapters are very related to each other, so the knowledge aquired from one chapter will be related to the knowledge aquired from the next. The author includes appendixes to explain how to use programs such as Excel to be able to create your own graphs (you do not have to waste your time browsing Google!) Furthermore, the book is very light in weight...you will not dread bringing it to class everyday! (In fact this is the most light weight textbook I own). One more important thing: the chapters are CONCISE and straight to the point...no unnecessary information is included. Each chapter is fairly short and easy to read...you will not be afraid to pursue reading this book.
