Basic Pharmacology for Nurses, 14th edition, is a contemporary classic nursing pharmacology textbook known for its impeccably accurate drug content and its practical applications of the nursing process. A consistent emphasis on health promotion through medication monitoring and patient education is a hallmark of the book. Introductory units ground the reader in basic principles of pharmacology and medication administration, and subsequent body-system units apply the nursing process to every major disorder and drug class to promote safe medication administration.
  • Provides an overview of relevant pathophysiology with an application of the nursing process in each drug chapter, followed by an application of the nursing process to each applicable drug class.
  • Covers the pharmacology of all major classes of drugs, emphasizing side effects to expect, side effects to report, drug interactions, and more.
  • Emphasizes patient education and health promotion with easy-to-recognize Patient Education and Health Promotion headings and reproducible Patient Self-Assessment forms.
  • Provides need-to-know coverage of herbal therapies and dietary supplements with an Herbal and Dietary Supplement Therapy chapter, plus Herbal Interactions boxes throughout the chapters.
  • A new chapter on cardiovascular disease and metabolic syndrome addresses the emerging links among cardiovascular disease, hypertension, dyslipidemia, obesity, and Type II diabetes.
  • Medication Safety Review sections at the end of each chapter include NCLEX Examination-style Content Review Questions, as well as Math Review Questions and Critical Thinking Questions.
  • Updated nursing diagnoses throughout reflect the 2005-2006 NANDA list of approved diagnoses.

2.0 out of 5 stars Many Answer Key Errors, March 12, 2008
By
H. Rippey (Portland, OR, USA) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
This review is from: Basic Pharmacology for Nurses, 14e (Paperback)
I was assigned this book for an online pharmacology course connected with a nursing re-entry program. I have found an unacceptable number of errors in this book and believe it can be dangerous for nursing students to use. The publishers should certainly be required to immediately make an erratum available with corrections. I am only about a third of the way through my program and note these errors:

p79 Exercise on sliding scale insulin dosage
**first answer should be TEN units (7+3) (book says 11)
**second answer should be ELEVEN units (7+4 - not 8...)
**p80 example 3 answer should be .66 ml NOT .75

p82 Exercise on drops per minute should say 60gtt PER ML NOT per hour at top of page. Also section is on gtt/min yet the answers are calling for mL/hr...

p261 Q3 answer should be 0.625 NOT 0.75 as noted in answer key.

p 355 paragraph on "fostering health maintenance" lists "high cholesterol foods" as "...fried foods, fatty desserts, and nuts..." While also saying that cholesterol is an animal product and not found in plants.

The book has excellent well written sections which make these errors look like a sloppy lack of editing and quality control.

Very helpful book. Breaks each medication down by body system and how it's used. Easy to find what you're looking for. Highly recommend.
