Book Description

"He who is prepared survives!"

The world is an ever changing, and increasingly dangerous place. Will you be prepared when disaster strikes? The Basic Prepping Guide is a great place to start.

Here's what you'll learn:

* why prepping doesn't make you a lunatic
* what you should be prepping for
* how to make a good evaluation plan
* what to have in your go bag
* prepping on a budget
* much more

This book is certainly not for advanced preppers, however, if you're new to prepping, this is a great place to get started!

The Basic Prepping Guide by Thom Cust is very basic and light on specifics. All of the information provided in this book is readily available for free on the internet. He has a section on "Radio Skills" and refers to "HAMM radio skills." It should be "Ham," not "HAMM." While this is a little thing it provides the reader with enough information to know that Cust doesn't know what he is writing about. This becomes a red flag for the rest of the information in this book. He repeatedly states you should take a CPR class from the Red Cross and sign up for FEMA classes. He has a section on "Mental Toughness" but never clearly defines it and is regurgitating information that is often repeated in other sources. In the section, "Don't Fall for `Survival Food' Hype," he states that "most of them don't taste very good at all." This is yet another red flag and almost all the ones that I have tasted were way better than I anticipated. These are not your grandfather's MRE's. This book has nothing new to offer and I doubt the authors real world experience in testing out the information that he writes about.

Overall Assessment:

The Basic Prepping Guide by Thom Cust lacks anything new or insightful even for a "Basic Prepping Guide." All of the information contained in this book is available for free on the internet. Too much of the information is either inaccurate, lacking, or fails to provide enough information to be useful.

I do NOT recommend this book.

5.0 out of 5 stars A thorough introductory guide to the subject September 22, 2012

This guide seems to give a thorough introduction to prepping. The guide outlines many common scenarios and what to think about in each situation. I was lucky enough to get this guide for free and, although the same information could be had for free on the Internet, if you lack the time or inclination to look it up youself then the author has brought it together for you in this guide.

1.0 out of 5 stars Don't even bother May 1, 2014

If you want the viable information from this book you can get it from FEMA ,don't waste your money. The author just gives the basic government advice in their own words and does not really understand what they are talking about. At one point it is suggested that you carry 7 gallons of water with your canned food. Not in a go bag if you want to walk more than 100 yards. Red Cross is also recommend, I would avoid Red Cross like the plague. Take classes with American Heart Association ,that is who medical professionals use. If you want a useful class take Wilderness First Aid before taking anything,it is much more useful. Don't sew anyone up with a needle and thread like this nut suggest,if you don't know why that is a good reason not to try. Also this genius does not understand how to incorporate commercial survival food in your planning. Basically stay away from this useless carp!
