The field of synthetic membrane science and technology is an active, growing field involving an interdisciplinary mixture of polymer chemistry, physical chemistry, and chemical engineering. Some membrane processes are reasonably well understood, and have been commercialised for some period of time. Other membrane processes have only recently been employed in commercial applications, and still other processes are only in formative research stages. This volume gives a comprehensive compendium of the basic principles in the field of synthetic membranes. The following topics are covered: basic aspects of membrane processes; materials and material properties; membrane preparation and characterisation; membrane transport; concentration polarisation and fouling; process and module design. The second edition of this well-established text has been considerably expanded and updated, and many chapters now contain sections giving solved and unsolved problems. Audience: This book is recommended as a textbook for undergraduate and graduate students, as well as a comprehensive reference for engineers, scientists, and technical management.

Review

`The text is written in clear, simple language and the occasional syntactical errors do not distort meanings. The book will serve as a useful introduction to the subject.'
Science and Technology

`The book is well structured, very clearly written, and thus easy to understand. With very instructive schematic drawings the author manages to describe complicated procedures and complex interrelations very clearly without extensive mathematical treatment.
All in all, the book is well balanced in its content and provides a complete treatment of membrane technology in sufficient depth to make it very useful for a membrane expert as well as for students and any newcomer to the field who wants a comprehensive and easy-to-understand introduction into membrane science and technology. The book is certainly a very valuable addition to today's membrane literature and a useful tool to everyone active in membrane research and development.' Membrane News 26
' Basic Principles of Membrane Technology by Marcel Mulder is a very welcome addition to the membrane literature. It provides an excellent overview of all aspects of membrane science....and I feel that the book should be strongly considered as a text-book for courses in membrane science and separations. ' Journal of Membrane Science 72 1992

5.0 out of 5 stars More then basic..., April 21, 2001
By A Customer
As a graduate student in engineering I find my self in a rush to acquire knowledge as fast as possible. Membrane processes for water treatment is an emerging science that have a great potential to be the future's main process for drinking water production. 'Basic Principles of Membrane Technology' is more than a basic book! It thoroughly go from the basics of membrane materials and manufacturing through transport in membranes, membrane processes and membrane fouling. Everything you need to know an beyond!

As text books go, this isn't one that you can read straight through. The english seems forced or unnatural in places and I often found myself having to re-read things to get what Mulder was trying to get accross. That said, as a reference book it's quite good. There is a lot of really useful information packed in to this book and if you just need to look something up this book is a great resource to have.

5.0 out of 5 stars A good book for someone who interested in membrane, March 8, 2007
This book is about basic and principle of membrane. Many researchers and theacher used it. Someone said this book is a standard book for anybody who make membrane.it's included basic and some process and some applications...
