5.0 out of 5 stars An Outsider's look at White America, November 3, 2000

This review is from: Basic Skills: Caucasian Americans Workbook (Paperback)
Caucasian Americans are not accustomed to being stereotyped and generalized in academic literature. This satirical look at the elements of ancient Caucasian American culture provides a glimpse into the ways mainstream academics stereotype, compartmentalize, and sometimes entirely miss the boat, in writing about American Minority populations. The mysterious ways Caucasian Americans live in dissonance with nature, the intriguing puberty rituals practiced all over suburbia, and an affinity for Tupperware are discussed as interesting bits of exotica. Much the same way Native American cultures are discussed in many popular and academic works by mainstream authors. This book uses humor to address important issues of racism, paternalism, and over-simplification of other cultures' traditions. I reccommend this book to anyone teaching mainstream students about other cultures as well as those who have been duped by new age shamans.
