This engaging, straightforward, and easy-to-read text is designed to prepare students for beginning mental health practice by helping them develop an overall appreciation of counseling and psychotherapy, along with the basic skills they will need to work effectively with clients. Skill-building exercises throughout the text help students master four types of skills: personal and professional development skills (including cultural sensitivity), communication skills, skills associated with the client's thoughts (cognitive skills), and skills associated with the client's emotions (affective skills).

1.0 out of 5 stars Not everything is quite related to the subject, April 19, 2004
By A Customer
This review is from: Basic Skills in Psychotherapy and Counseling (Hardcover)
I must admit that I haven't finished this book; My review is based on the first few chapters only. The book starts off with well-meant advice on taking care of yourself, which is entirely in the wrong place here. I mean, the idea is good, but two or three lines ("this is tough work so make sure you can handle it") would have done. Now we get an entire chapter on dietary advice, how to chew (!), relaxation exercises, the advice to get in touch with nature, a recommendation to get in shape etc etc etc - information for which there are plenty of own (and more reliable) fora. Personally, I do not see how using olive oil and always having a cooked grain and a cooked legume in the fridge would make me a better therapist, and I noticed several recommendations that are not even supported by nutritional scientists. I just couldn't bother anymore to find out what the author had to say about her own area of expertise after having read all the 'self-care skill' stuff. Maybe it's more relevant, but personally I can't care less about finding out.

Are you a vegan? No, well then you are not qualified to be an therapist because you are not following a healthy lifestyle. This is an awful, awful book. Burn it.

1.0 out of 5 stars If I could give it less stars, I would...., October 5, 2009

This review is from: Basic Skills in Psychotherapy and Counseling (Hardcover)
In fact, if I could give this NEGATIVE stars, I would. I have never been in favor of book burning, but if I was I would start here. I'm on chapter 4 of this book, and so far it has discussed 1) how white therapists are racist, and if you don't admit you are, you're in denial and MORE racist 2)the fact that I am a spiritually unclean person because I eat meat. And 3) the fact that cancer patients shouldn't get chemo because its worse than the disease, they should look for good herbal and physical therapies instead. I am not kidding, that example is actually used in there. All of this on top of how grinding your own flour and eating organic, locally grown, in-season foods will make you more wholesome and a better therapist. And backed up with a bunch of un-true statements about the benefits of organic foods by the way. I'm upset my grad school forced me to put money in this woman's pocket.
