Book Description

December 1996 186094079X 978-1860940798
This textbook deals with the requirements of space physics. The first part starts with a description of the Earth's plasma environment, followed by a derivation of single particle motions in electromagnetic fields, with applications to the Earth's magnetosphere. Then the origin and effects of collisions and conductivities, formation of the ionosphere, magnetospheric convection and dynamics, and solar wind-magnetosphere coupling are discussed. The second part of the book presents a more theoretical foundation of plasma physics, starting from kinetic theory. Introducing moments of the distribution function permits derivation of the fluid equations, followed by an analysis of fluid boundaries, with the Earth's magnetopause and bow shock as examples. Finally, fluid and kinetic theory are applied to derive the relevant wave modes in a plasma. A representative selection of the many space plasma instabilities and relevant aspects of nonlinear theory is given in a companion textbook, Advanced Space Plasma Physics, by the same authors.

3.0 out of 5 stars Not a bad introductory book April 15, 2000
By A Customer
Format:Paperback
Quite useful tool for students intending to go on in the area of space plasmas, but it is also good reference book for those working in the area, when they need to recall some basic information. However, some parts could be treated in more detail, and some parts are not explained in the best way. And main problem is that some parts should be in different order, then in third or fourth chapter would need to be coments like: "We will show it later in the fifth chapter". This might be not a problem for a researcher in the area who uses the book as a reference tool, however, students who are new in the area, be aware. Overall, it is quite interesting reading.

4.0 out of 5 stars Just pointing out an error here.... June 21, 2014
Format:Paperback
This is the best book you'll get for the basics, combine it with 'Introduction to Space Physics' by Kivelson and Russell and you'll be set for all your solar/planetary/magnetospheric stuff.

This isn't a proper review, I just wanted to say that on P.56 Fig 4.4 the Hall and Pedersen labels (sigma H and sigma P) should be switched around, that way they conform to the earlier equations and also the later statements in the book. This mistake caused me some pain during my PhD viva because I understanding was incorrect due to the figure, so this mistake went a long way for me..!
