Editorial Reviews

Take an African safari, mix it with a hunt for good surf, and you have a surfin' surfari. A simple mixing of these concepts gave the 'Surfaris' their name in 1962. This album features newly re-recorded versions of the band's most popular songs, plus their versions of some other legendary 60's music, re-mixed and mastered by 7-time Grammy Award winner Roger Nichols. Got It. 2003.

5.0 out of 5 stars Crisp & Clean Renditions!, January 9, 2004
This review is from: Basic Tracks (Audio CD)
Contemporary recordings of Classic Surfari tunes; if you are a Surfaris fan, and want to hear them perform super-clean state-of-the-art renditions of tunes that put them on the Surf Map years ago, this CD is a must. I would not say this CD is necessarily better than their classic releases, but it is definitely something fresh for your collection.

About the only song that left me flat was the Hawaii Five-0 cover;in my opinion, it's tough to put a fresh spin on that tune without taking something away from that adrenaline "Book 'em Danno" rush I get each I hear it.

Everything else on this CD rocks! I especially enjoyed their new spin on "Apache" and "Penetration." They give these tunes a fresh coat of paint without butchering the spirit of the songs.

If you enjoy this release, I highly recommend chasing it with The Ventures' 1998 release "New Depths," which I believe to be one of the top 10 surf albums ever recorded.
