This is an excellent resource pertaining to the various aspects of pastoral care and counseling with pertinent examples applicable for most situations.

This is one that should be kept for use out of the class room environment, It gives great examples that can aid in counseling.

I rated this book with the lowest rating because it was filled with mainline liberal 'theology' and was more informed by cultural norms than Biblical ones. The book clearly did not take the Bible seriously with regards to orthodoxy or orthopraxy. Because it was required reading for a class, I found myself racing through the end. There are so many other good books on pastoring and counseling (see Eugene Peterson and Paul David Tripp) and it's a shame this one is so highly touted. The irony with the agenda pushed by the book is that it's adaptations to remain 'relevant' in society have in fact contributed to the decline of the relevance of all mainline protestant denominations.

This is clearly a Magnus Opus in the field of pastoral counseling. I can see it being a seminary text, easy and getting more reviews of excellence as the years go on.

Enjoyed the book, and found it helpful in my pastoral care class. The only down side to my whole experience with it was the shipping delays that caused me to have to play catch up with my assigned reading.
