This is the best text for medical students and first year residents that I have reviewed. It starts from "ground zero", presuming no knowledge of anesthesia, and builds upon a basic science background (especially in areas like pharmacology) to incorporate material learned during the first two years of medical school. My favorite part of the text are the pearls of knowledge that appear throughout the chapters to highlight information. These highlights include tables of important anatomical/ physiological facts, or drug dosing information; as well as extremely useful differential diagnoses for monitor failures or values outside of the normal range.

Unlike some people, I found this book to be very readable, which in my opinion makes it an excellent choice to start off your anesthesia training with. I found that it offers a quick run-through of most topics. Unfortunately, I haven't opened this book since I finished my first year. Instead I go to the more detailed texts. I'm not sure about studying for the boards from it. It doesn't seem to me like it has enough information. But anyways, I think that it's a great introduction and I have to say that it helped me many, many times during my first few months in anesthesia. I would buy this book again.

Do yourself a favor when you start to REALLY study for the writtens. Take ALL of your other anesthesia books and stack them in the corner across the room. Then sit down and basically KNOW THIS BOOK FRONT TO BACK (about 4 or 5 different colors of highlighter is about right). Take a bunch of practice exams (the MGH workbook is pretty good) and you'll be ready to knock back a few cold ones the night after you smoke the writtens. Works for the Re-cert also.
For the orals check out Yao's "Problem-Oriented Patient Management".

as a first year clinical anesthesiology resident, i was told to get this book. I wish I had saved the money for the Lange book. This book was a disjointed collection of facts that were difficult to absorb. In an attempt at brevity, they sacrificed readability. I found myself struggling through many of the chapters and was hard pressed to say I truly understood what I had just read. As I have further progressed in my reading, I feel that the authors should have explained key basic concepts rather than condense "big miller." Not a good beginner book...Would get Lange book and save money for the big miller or barash.

If you are on a anethesia rotation this is a must have. Easy to read and helps you with all aspects of your rotation.

the book is very good. it teaches the BASICS of anesthesia very well. The basics are very important if one wishes to continue to learn more down the line. Highly recommended and relatively easy to understand

Great for the rotating resident on anesthesia its the mini bible more basic than the U Mass text.

Can't review the book itself because I'm not a doctor but my daughter is, and I purchased this for her as a gift at her request, so I guess she likes it.

The delivery service was excellent!

This book is good for warming-up to the majors(big Miller), it can help to get doing basic anesthesia. Just don't think you'll pass boards and know all of anesthesia by just reading this.
