Editorial Reviews

Basics of Biblical Hebrew Video Lectures provides 36 easy-to-follow lessons (6 DVDs) introducing the grammar and language of the Hebrew Bible. Integrated for use with today’s bestselling Hebrew text, it is an ideal resource for traditional students in need of additional instruction; for professors, who can now utilize precious classroom time for discussion and exercises—and have students watch lectures at home; and for self-learners and homeschoolers with an interest in learning Hebrew on their own.

Each lesson is approximately half an hour and is taught by experienced teacher Miles V. Van Pelt using a logical and simple method of learning biblical Hebrew, an approach he’s refined over more than 20 years of studying and instructing students in biblical languages. Focused on the structural pattern of biblical Hebrew instead of tedious memorization, each video session will give students in formal language classes and self-learners alike the basic understanding they need to begin studying the Hebrew Scriptures.

Learning any language is hard enough. But, when it's a dead language that is so totally foreign that it's not even in the same family - well, that's harder. But, there is also tremendous value in learning another language. I found that studying Greek and Hebrew in Bible college helped me understand English grammar. Learning another language made me a better writer and speaker. Go figure. Benefits aside, most of us avoid languages because (1) we don't have to know them (with English being a trade language and all), and (2) it's really, really hard to learn.

I have given Biblical Hebrew a number of solid attempts. With each effort I have gotten better, but nowhere close to where I would like to be. I have always found the Basics of Biblical Hebrew to be a helpful series. The grammar and workbook are user friendly and designed for the learner. But, I also felt myself wishing there was some sort of companion that would talk me through the chapters. Zondervan has recently released their newest addition to the BBH family. The Video Lectures are a series of DVDs with Dr. Miles Van Pelt (co-author of the BBH grammar and workbook) talking through each chapter as he would in the classroom.

These DVDs provide cover for what was originally an experiential gap in their system. I say it is "experiential" because the gap wasn't due to a lack of information. These addition of video lectures creates an additional layer of interaction that serves to clarify the content. It also adds pedagogical value by offering another avenue to approach the same content. Also, these videos are very professional. The quality is high and the menus are well-designed with an aesthetic appeal. The only weakness of these video lectures is that Dr. Van Pelt often came across as wooden.

I am in the process of learning Hebrew by myself at home. I had purchased the textbook and workbook first, but found it difficult by itself with no human interaction. Miles Vanpelt has provided an excellent way to make u feel like u are sitting in his class. Going to class is not an option at this time, but this is definitely a great alternative to home teaching.
My favorite part about this method of teaching is u can keep going back until u are comfortable with it.

Van Pelt and Pratico's textbook on biblical Hebrew known as "Basics of Biblical Hebrew" is used in many colleges and seminaries today as an introduction to Biblical Hebrew. This textbook is very similar to Mounce's "Basics of Biblical Greek", a well-known textbook that is widely praised by many for its unique approach. Both of these books, while imperfect in various ways, serve as very understandable introductions to these biblical languages.

Zondervan has recently continued to expand its language resources line and has recently added these wonderful video lectures covering each chapter from BBH. These lectures are given by Miles Van Pelt in a conversational and understandable format. These are well produced video lectures and contain slides taken from BBH within each presentation. Van Pelt basically covers the material in the chapters of the book but the additional explanation given by Van Pelt, in addition to being able to hear the pronunciation, is quite valuable to the student who does not have access to a Hebrew instructor.

Van Pelt obviously has a real enthusiasm for the biblical languages as he teaches all three biblical languages (Hebrew, Aramaic, and Greek) at RTS and continues to produce new language resources that will prove to be very helpful to the struggling student (see his new book on Biblical Aramaic). Van Pelt's approach to Hebrew does not assume too much grammatical knowledge on the part of the student and gives clear and simple explanations to difficult concepts.

These video lectures are particularly helpful if one does not have access to a Hebrew instructor who can explain the concepts.

This video series is a MUST to the student buying the workbook and textbook. It helped me tremendously!! The teacher is very good at explaining the material- though not a Jew, so he has a 'goy' accent. Also, they pronounce the Vav as "waw", which is not modern Hebrew. Now the Vav is pronounced "Ve".

This DVD set definitely helps those who gain a little better understanding from visually seeing the material and hearing a lecture along with it. I would highly recommend this to the individual learner or classroom!
