Editorial Reviews

From the Back Cover

These excellent tools for studying New Testament Greek are now even better. As a result of feedback from professors, the author has made adjustments to his material. For example, a chapter on clauses has been added at the end of the book. The workbook has been significantly rewritten. Nearly 50 percent of the verses are new. They are shorter and more focused on the grammar of the chapter.

Features include:

• Best-selling Greek language textbook • Changes from the first edition made in response to ten years of use • An appendix in the Grammar allows professors to introduce verbs earlier in the course • Two tracks in the workbook: track one allows you to go through the book in the normal order. Track two has totally different exercises that allow you to teach verbs earlier.

• Workbook has 3-hole, perforated pages

I am 72 years old and have had trouble memorizing materials for several years. So, I was concerned about studying a language, particularly one as unfamilar to me as Greek. However, because of my strong personal interest in biblical studies, I decided to spend some time learning the basics of the Greek language.

I explored several products, and decided to try Bill Mounce's basic program in biblical Greek. At first, I only looked at the textbook "Basics of Biblical Greek--Grammar". I soon found out that Bill Mounce has several products about biblical Greek, but the materials are all intertwined. He even has a website with additional learning opportunities.

The product I am reviewing here is a 'workbook' that can be used with the textbook 'Basics of Biblical Greek'. I would recommend that a person not purchase this workbook unless they own the textbook. This workbook contains exercises to assist the student in learning biblical Greek, and is dependent on having access to materials in the textbook. It is 'old school' like when I was in grade school and used a workbook to complete exercises in my English class. The individual pages are perforated along the edge and can be torn out, worked, and placed in a three-ring binder for storage. To date, I haven't torn any pages out of my book. I just write on them and leave them intact.

The book begins with exercises on the 'alphabet', 'breathing marks', punctuation, and syllabification. The book then moves to chapters on nouns and the use of definite articles, prepositions, adjectives, and personal pronouns. Chapters on verbs and their tenses follow those on nouns. While the student is learning these basic tools of the language, there are exercises to complete on pronunciation and vocabulary.

I have long wanted to learn to study the scriptures in the original languages. Mounce's "Basics of Biblical Greek" is allowing me to do just that. I am using the text book as a self-study tool and after trying numerous Greek language texts, this book is helping me make my dream a reality. Each chapter builds upon the last, to steadily increase your vocabulary and understand the construction of the Greek language. Although there is some memory work required, Bill Mounce has reduced this to the bare essentials. This in no way hinders the student from learning Greek in any way. The Paradigms are constructed is such a way that it has been relatively easy to handle the memory work of each chapter. I would recommend this text book to anyone who is serious about learning New Testament Greek on your own. The author also maintains a website with study guides, vocabulary, chapter overviews and lectures that you can subscribe to for a very reasonable cost. I've taken this route and it is much like sitting in on his class lectures, with the benefit of a pause button. Again, as I've said, I've tried learning Greek with other text books and I can say, "I'm further along in my studies now than ever before." Thank you Mr. Mounce!

I have now worked through the first five chapters of the textbook, "Basics of Biblical Greek," as well as this workbook. I have found that I have quickly developed a fondness for how William Mounce approaches teaching. It seems as if he has put a lot of thought and effort into making learning Koine Greek possible and probable. If you use both books in conjunction with the Teknia website, there is plenty of information between all three to keep the beginning learner on their toes. I am very thankful for how there are so many free resources on the Teknia webpage. Truly a service to the body of Christ. After making my way through what I have done so far, I am left hopeful that I can actually learn this material.

For anyone using Mounce's Basics of Biblical Greek textbook, this workbook is almost a neccesity. Translations that are paced for the student are sequenced by chapter and are an easier alternative to translating raw passages of the New Testament. I went through a semester of Greek in college using this workbook; it helped tremendously!

Good workbook but I just wished there also were the answers available so you could correct yourself afterwards. Together with Basics of Biblical Greek they give a good foundation and progress to study Greek .

If you have his grammar book, then this workbook is a necessary tool that goes along with it. Practice makes perfect, and this is a great way to start integrating your knowledge of Koine Greek. He gives you words to parse within each chapter along with translation sentences that are taken right out of the NT for the most part. The only reason I didn't give it four stars was because there are a few errors throughout the workbook. Make sure you check the answers. You can get them by searching for the answers to this workbook and it should appear as a PDF. Enjoy!

I am currently using this text and the work book to instruct 11 adults in a basic understanding of Koine Greek. This text book is great! He gives lots of examples and juxtaposes English grammar examples alongside Greek. It does go into a bit more detail that I expected a strictly basic grammar would: the chapter on syllablification goes into detail that challenges students and I don't know that it is all that helpful considering speaking of the words is not the major emphasis. But all in all this grammar is fantastic.
