More About the Author

John Pinel, the author of Biopsychology (9th Edition), obtained his Ph.D. from McGill University in Montreal and worked briefly at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, before taking a faculty position at the University of British Columbia, where he is currently Professor Emeritus.

Professor Pinel is an award-winning teacher and the author of over 200 scientific papers. However, he feels that Biopsychology is his major career-related accomplishment. "It ties together everything I love about my job; students, teaching, writing, and research." Pinel attributes much of his success to his wife Maggie who is an artist and professional designer. Over the years, they have collaborated on many projects, and the quality of Biopsychology's illustrations is largely attributable to her skill and effort.

Pinel is an enthusiastic West African drummer who performs at local clubs, festivals, and drum circles with Nigerian drum master Kwasi Iruoje. For relaxation, he loves to cuddle his three cats: Rastaman, Sambala, and Squeak.

This book is extremely well written, interesting, and understandable. If you have not studied anything of neurology, it is the best first step. I am very picky about books, and this is a keeper. I'm a nursing student, and having finished the nursing prerequisites, this is a good plus to understand a major aspect of physiology.

A couple comments/warnings:

It covers a lot of basic physiology/anatomy/genetics, so it may seem like a lot of review if you've had pre-medical training.

Emotions and feelings are almost completely absent, odd considering "psychology" is in the title.

He's Canadian, and has a wonderful and quirky writing style that I've mostly seen from Canadian authors.

Love the way this book was written, love all the graphics and pictures, great help in understanding the material. The summaries at at the end of each chapter are very helpful. Nonetheless, it is a LOT of information. Author and Professors alike, should break this book down into 2 Volumes and 2 Classes. That way the student has every opportunity to really retain as much of this information as possible.
