Michael Zak's book, "Back to the Basics for the Republican Party," is at once a splendid history lesson of our nation and an illuminating dialogue of our political system. Mr. ZaK begins with the events and the ideas that gave rise to the Republican Party. He goes on to explain how the fundamental tenets of the party enabled the Republicans to save the Union, rid our country of slavery and lay the foundation for the modern American economy. Mr. Zak then discusses how the GOP strayed from its principles, allowing the Democratic Party to gain the advantage. Finally, the author provides, through his own incisive analysis, the framework by which the Republican Party can regain the moral and political high ground, and lead America to even greater accomplishments. Nonetheless, this book is neither a dry nor a pedantic study. It is a thoughtful, well-written, compelling and entertaining discourse in the realm of politics. Most importantly, "Back to the Basics for the Republican Party" is a clarion call for the GOP to return to its roots. I highly recommend this outstanding book.

I enjoyed this book more than many others I have seen on this topic. It is very detailed, informative, and well-organized. It is particularly useful if you are a Republican activist. This book can help you sift the wheat from the chaff, focus on the major issues, and make you proud of your Party's past. A student of history can be a guide to the future. You need to know the information in this book.

To be an effective citizen one has to know our political history. Michael Zak carefully traces the Republican Party from Revolutionary War times to the present. He demonstrates how the issue of slavery has defined our history and to this day casts a shadow over our culture.
The lack of historical perspective by the general public has allowed the media to recast the past in the image of current mythology. Michael Zak goes where most popular reporting and writing dare not go. He discusses the basic facts and in simple language recounts the moral courage that the Republican party was built on. He also traces missed opportunities and a squandered relationship with the African-American electorate.
The book is short enough to read rapidly in a few days, but leaves a powerful imagery of a party which has an opportunity to define the future in terms of freedom and liberty.
This was an enjoyable book that riveted my attention. I couldn't put it down. I thank Michael Zak for his insight and wisdom.

"Back to Basics for the Republican Party" provides a detailed history of the Republican Party as well as a thorough explanation of Party politics in general. Interspersed within the text are delightful little gems of human interest such as, "It was when rung at a ceremony to mark the death of John Marshall in 1835 that the Liberty Bell cracked." (60)
Author Michael Zak's writing is very readable; it is both informative and entertaining for the lay as well as the professional audience. He has a straightforward style for presenting facts, yet he also writes with a passion that moves the reader to conviction; at times I felt as if I was actually there.
If you are a Republican, you should buy this book; it will make you proud of your Republican heritage. If you are a Democrat, you should also buy this book-you may find some surprises about your Party's history as well. As Mr. Zak so eloquently quotes in his text, "For you shall know the truth, and the truth shall set you free." (6)

For a life long Republican, this book really brings home the true heritage of the party. In under 300 pages, Mr. Zak details the start of the Republican party along with actual policy positions that shaped the Republican party we know today. These positions held by our party included advocating an end to slavery and granting voting rights to blacks (just to name two) -- positions that the Democrats vehemently opposed.
It has been said that to know where one is headed, one has to look at where they've been. This book will hopefully serve as a guide to Republicans and Independents alike that the party that stands for what is right for America remains the Republican party.
Great work, Mr. Zak!

Michael Zek had done extensive research into the history of the Republican Party. From its beginnings in 1854 as the anti-slavery party to the latest Presidential election, Mr. Zek expresses the point of view that the Republican Party is and has always been the party of Human Freedom. This is a book to read if you want to understand how a political party helps shape the history of a nation.
