A step-by-step photo guide to scale modeling for bare-bones beginners,
By Midwest Book Review (Oregon, WI USA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: The Basics of Scale Modeling (FineScale Modeler Books) (Paperback)
Lawrence Hansen compiles The Basics Of Scale Modeling, a step-by-step photo guide to scale modeling for bare-bones beginners. The best models are tiny museum-quality replicas of the real thing: the art lies in capturing the element of realism of the real thing, and it's an art presented by The Basics Of Scale Modeling's techniques culled from FineScale Modeler magazine articles covering the basics. From setting up the initial work area and assembling the tools to planning a project for smooth success, this is a 'must' for any who would start on their first scale model.

I am a retired school teacher and other than the modeling I did as a child, I consider myself a beginner. This book gave me a lot of up to date info, and now I am able to afford more quality supplies. I am interested primarily in planes I have flown in and sailing ships. This book is a wealth of help for me. sincerely, Ken

Good Beginner's Book,
This review is from: The Basics of Scale Modeling (FineScale Modeler Books) (Paperback)
I found the formatting of the book to be great for reading straight through or as a quick starting reference when in the workshop. There's a lot of nifty tips and tricks throughout the entire book.
However, while actually constructing models, I felt that the book left some more specific questions such as what to do with the landing gear of a plane I'm preparing to airbrush. In defense of the book, the book does cover a lot of ground. To sum it up, buy this book if you want to know about modeling in general, otherwise buy a book that focuses on a specific type of models you wish to build.

As a retired person with lots of time on my hands I decided to got back into modeling. Never did a lot of it but always found some time to dabble in plastic model building. When deciding on what supplies to have on hand and how to use them, I bought "The Basics of Scale Modeling" published by FineScale Modeler. I am amazed at the information in the book and how easy it was to follow the suggestions on the types of materials to use and how to use them. I am VERY pleased with the results of the first plane I've built in over 40 years. I would recommend this book as a must buy to anyone who is starting or getting back into modeling and as a good reference book to those who are currently into this great hobby.

Like most people I did this hobby as kid. I recently found a couple unfinshed car models I bought as an adult. This time I decided to try and do them more profesionally. After seeing what can be done with scale car models. So I did some research and bought a couple of books. The first being The Basics of Scale Modeling. I was looking for a book that would help me as a beginner as well as assist me for future projects. This book provide great information with great photos. I would recommend it for anyone who is starting out or for someone who is looking for great tips from the pros.
