This book is probably the the best investment, I ever made for my playing.
Lynne de Velazquez
If you are a violin student or player, and you can read, then you simply must have this book in your library (which is to say, on your music stand).
Andres Sender
Yes, it's comprehensive and initially intimidating, but it's also a model of clarity, and extremely well structured.
G. Caplan

It is really difficult to encompass this book's virtues in words without sounding like empty sales hype.
But in truth this book IS a superlative, one-of-a-kind 'must have', can't-go-wrong, worth-every-penny gem. *Basics* is a collection of exercises focussed on specific areas of violin technique, often with a very narrow focus so that complex skills are broken down into their simplest components. There is material here that is of use to everyone, whether a beginning player looking to supplement their teacher's assignments (and comprehension,) to the advanced professional looking for efficient methods of maintaining or refining their skills.
Simon Fischer is a highly-regarded teacher in the UK, a very articulate and thoughtful problem-solver whose column of the same name has been running in 'The Strad' magazine for 10 years.
Great photos, profusely illustrated, clear descriptions. The sort of book you would wish for if it didn't already exist.
If you are a violin student or player, and you can read, then you simply must have this book in your library (which is to say, on your music stand).

I don't understand Amazon's difficulty stocking this book but Basics is in no way out of print. It is published by Edition Peters (No. 7440) and is available regularly through [...] The book is around $30.00. I normally say "let the market decide", but I'm troubled by the 99.00 price being asked by someone who (unless they're referring to a hardcover edition) I feel is taking advantage of Amazon's incorrect "out-of-print" status.

This book is not an inexpensive book but can be bought new for under $50.00. It is not out of print but can be hard to get. As for the book: if you're a beginner or intermediate this book is essential. From basic to advanced bow handing, string fingering, etc. Not just a sentence or two but there are many pictures to help understand and pages of instructions on playing the violin as well as the music. There are many other books that are good and desirable, but this one is a must. I have many books on playing the violin and this book is by fare the best I have seen for instructional help. It's a must have.

It's an expensive book. Not the book I expected as it is for advanced violin students. The example repertoire is for higher grade students. The sample pieces should be for lower grade student especially if the title is called "basics". The title should be change to "Virtuoso" violinist.

The serious student should have this book in his library. My only criticism is that this is a book that should be read but it is also a book to be used. I wish my copy was spiral bound so it would lay flat on my stand. I hate to break the binding of a book.

Why do they like to take all the really great pedagogy books out of print? Seriously - I swear it was at the book store last year and now it's out of print. Grr.
Ok... If you teach/play violin - this book is a must have - So search for it.

I got my money's worth on the first page! Those little nuances that are so important to every violinist, in order to produce a beautiful sound are captured in every exercise. This book is probably the the best investment, I ever made for my playing.
