5.0 out of 5 stars Traditional BASICS...from the NRA.
This is the student handbook for the NRA Basic Pistol Course. When a friend or relative wants to learn to shoot a handgun, I buy them this book...it lets the beginner study at home, BEFORE that 1st big day at the range. The 1st two chapters give them some confidence about how revolvers and semi-automatics work, what the different parts are called, and the most common...

This review is from: Basics of Pistol Shooting (Paperback)
This is the student handbook for the NRA Basic Pistol Course. When a friend or relative wants to learn to shoot a handgun, I buy them this book...it lets the beginner study at home, BEFORE that 1st big day at the range. The 1st two chapters give them some confidence about how revolvers and semi-automatics work, what the different parts are called, and the most common ammunition types. The next two chapters cover safe handling and operating. Having an idea of gun safety is a big stress reducer...for both of us. All chapters have a review section. It's very well indexed with glossary.

Handguns CAN be intimidating, but if you're the proverbial friend or relative who's "knowledgeable about firearms"...remember: SO CAN YOU! This book makes me a much better teacher. I find a beginner much easier to teach when they have some dignity about what they've learned so far, and, when I stick to the basics (instead of trying to remember and include everything I know), they can actually learn something! It also covers holds for different shooting positions, basic cleaning, sight picture, and how to improve.

This is the book to teach or learn the basics. It's from the NRA, and it's the best.

5.0 out of 5 stars Highly Recommended Basic Pistol Book!, September 23, 2009
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This is a great book for learning pistol shooting fundamentals. I recommend it to all my friends that want to start pistol shooting. In fact, I have read it myself and wished I had this book years ago when I first started.

This book covers firearm safety, pistol types, pistol components (including ammunition), pistol operation, and the fundamentals of pistol shooting. There are a lot of well illustrated pictures that help you see what is being taught. The book teaches only a few common shooting stances, from sitting to standing. At the end of every chapter there is a short review quiz to help you judge what you have learned. At the end of the book there is also a nice section that helps diagnose and fix common accuracy problems. There is no heavy handed pro-gun message; this is a great no-nonsense guide to the basics of pistol shooting.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great book, but take the class., June 13, 2010
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
Being new to handguns / firearms I wanted to learn from the experts, the NRA. This book is basic and fundamental, as you would expect by the title. I bought mine, then took the NRA class by the same name and they gave me this book. The best idea, therefore, is to take the NRA class. That was an excellent experience. Now I have the book knowledge and the practical skills to boot. Do you want an basic orientation to pistols? This is the book for you.

There is a lot to know about using any gun. Most of that comes from practicing. This little book will get you on target paper quickly. Now, all you have to do is earn your accuracy by shooting a few thousand rounds down range. Be safe out there!
