Does a good job covering the life of Basil I. The book has pages of notes and Bibliography. In fact they cover about half the book. Not easy reading but certainly covers an important period of the Byzantine Empire. I'd have rated it a 5 but for the lack of any maps. Hard to follow history without relevant maps
