Mysterious Mythology!, October 4, 2006
This review is from: The Basilisks (Monsters (Kidhaven Press)) (Hardcover)
I was very impressed with the fast-moving pace and creepy details that Lori Mortensen has woven into a fact filled nonfiction book for readers ages 9 to 11. The text is divided into three high interest chapters. The Attack of the Basilisk outlines the origins of people's beliefs in this snake-like monster, ranging back in time to the middle ages. The next chapter, The Legendary Basilisk, describes curses, horrors and plagues attributed to this frightful beast. The last chapter, The Basilisk Strikes Again, explains how this wierd creature has slithered into modern times through Dungeons and Dragons, Marvel comics and Harry Potter's Chamber of Secrets. As an elementary school teacher, I have included this valuable book in our mythology unit on legendary creatures. I can highly recommend Basilisks for it's clear vocabulary, historical facts and gruesome, kid-friendly themes.
