Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

Grade 1-4-Through fictional characters, Howard shows how five poor, uneducated women get a bank loan and start a business in Bangladesh. Their perseverance is admirable, and the similarities and contrasts between opportunities in the U.S. and those in this nation would certainly lend themselves to discussion. Illustrations show the five friends as they go about their work, against a backdrop of the countryside and village. A brief but succinct explanation of various questions readers might ask is included at the end of the book. The intended audience is questionable; while the book is written on a very simple reading level, the concepts and required background knowledge are for an older age group. Unless one's library has ample funds, this is not a necessary purchase.

5.0 out of 5 stars A multicultural winner!, May 5, 2003
By A Customer
This review is from: Basket Of Bangles, A (Library Binding)
This book delivers a keen insight to the impact of micro-lending as a positive force for change. The story tells how a young woman and four of her friends, with seed money borrowed from an innovative bank in Bangladesh, change their lives by starting their own businesses. It works on many levels including multiculturalism, women's rights, capitalism and entrepreneurship. Based on the real success of the Grameen Bank, this is the kind of story that all western children need to understand in an ever growing global village. This book has recently been listed as one of the Best Children's Books of the Year from Bank Street College and also received a 2003 Skipping Stones Honor Award in the Multicultural and International Books category.

Although this looks like a child's book, I recently donated my copy to the local Community College library for our English as a Second Language Program.

It is a very inspiring story about how women in Bangladesh are able to get micro-loans to begin home-based businesses.

Illustrated by former Delawarean, Cheryl Kirk Noll, the book has lovely pictures that both children and adults will learn from and enjoy.
