Gr. 5-8. In this entry in the Sports Palaces series, Owens offers basketball fans an inside look at a number of professional basketball arenas through fans' stories, little-known facts, and players' reminiscences. An account of the beginning of professional basketball and a brief history of the professional leagues set the stage for detailed looks at the Boston Garden, Chicago Stadium, and the "old" Madison Square Garden. Players, owners, architects, and fans share their memories about the unique qualities of the old arenas and comment on today's multipurpose stadiums that host basketball, hockey, and community events. Photos, most of which are in color, show the inside and outside of several arenas, players in action, and how an ice rink is transformed into a basketball court. Avid fans will appreciate the stories; most won't care that the text is occasionally a bit sentimental and folksy. A basketball court diagram and resources for more information are appended.
