Grade 3-5-- Three titles that are acceptable although not commendable. Consisting of 9 to 13 chapters, each gives a brief history of the sport, followed by instruction in the different skills involved and the rules that govern the games. Soccer and Basketball conclude with a chapter consisting of a few paragraphs on sportsmanship. The books contain a brief forward by a rather nondescript coach or former coach in each sport. None have a glossary; all are oversimplified. Since they are aimed at beginners, it's unfortunate that the authors attempt to explain such complicated skills as a hook shot in basketball and the western forehand grip in tennis. The black-and-white drawings and diagrams range from good to useless. The court and field diagrams are a plus, while the occasionally inserted comic drawings, e.g., a basketball player carrying a suitcase in the explanation of a traveling violation, add nothing. --Tom S.
